Cyclone Senyar: Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Threaten Coastal India
A low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is poised to intensify into Cyclone Senyar within the next 24 hours, bringing the threat of rough seas, heavy rainfall, and strong winds to coastal regions. Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to prepare for potential disruptions and heed all official warnings.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a weather warning on Monday, advising the public to “avoid sea travel, secure essentials, follow official updates & move to safe shelters if required.” The system is currently tracking in a west-northwest direction and is expected to impact several states in the coming days.
Expected Rainfall and Affected Areas
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are bracing for particularly intense rainfall, with forecasts predicting heavy to very heavy precipitation between November 25 and November 29. Beyond the islands, heavy to very heavy rain is also anticipated in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam, according to the IMD.
There is also a possibility of rainfall in coastal districts of Odisha between November 25 and November 27, contingent on further intensification of the low-pressure system over the Strait of Malacca and the South Andaman Sea.
Cyclone Formation and Path
According to IMD scientist Sanjeev Dwivedi, the system is expected to continue moving “in a west-northwest direction.” The IMD anticipates the system will strengthen and potentially become Cyclone Senyar on November 26.
The name ‘Senyar’ was contributed by the United Arab Emirates and signifies a ‘lion’ within the naming convention for cyclonic storms in the North Indian Ocean. This naming system helps in easy identification and tracking of these potentially devastating weather events.
