“It was time for me to pass the baton on to the next set of leaders who are going to take our city to the next level,” Bowser stated. She emphasized that the decision was deeply personal, made with her family in mind, and a recognition that now is the opportune moment for a new chapter.
“It’s probably the hardest thing I’ve had to do – to walk away from a job I love. But I know we’ve accomplished the things I’ve set out to do,” Bowser reflected. She affirmed her confidence in her ability to win another election, stating, “I’ve never lost an election.”

Bowser’s announcement comes after a period marked by navigating a complex political landscape, including ongoing federal oversight of the District’s budget and legislative processes. Despite these challenges, Bowser has focused on key initiatives aimed at revitalizing neighborhoods and improving the quality of life for D.C. residents.
Her governance has prioritized economic development, focusing on utilizing underutilized areas like the St. Elizabeths campus, Walter Reed, and The Wharf into thriving communities with housing, shopping, and healthcare facilities. She emphasized the need for continued growth, stating, “We have to attract more businesses; we have to keep and attract more residents.”
Significant accomplishments during her time in office include a 30% decrease in homelessness and the closure of the problematic DC General Family Shelter. Her administration also aimed to address the housing crisis, adding 36,000 homes ahead of schedule.

A key achievement was reaching an agreement to bring the Washington Commanders back to D.C. and redevelop the RFK Stadium campus.
