NASA’s Mars Mission, ESCAPADE, Overcomes Obstacles to Unlock Red Planet’s Secrets

NASA’s latest robotic mission to Mars, ESCAPADE, should perhaps have been named the Great Escape, given how many times it has eluded doom. Launched November 13th, the mission promises to deliver crucial data about the dramatic transformation of Mars – from a once-habitable planet wiht a thick atmosphere and flowing water to the cold, dry, and nearly airless world it is indeed today. Beyond its scientific goals, ESCAPADE could also redefine cost-effective space exploration, according to Rob Lillis, the mission’s principal investigator.

A Troubled Path to the Launchpad

The road to ESCAPADE’s launch was anything but smooth. NASA initially rejected Lillis’ proposal several years ago. The mission – an acronym for Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers – only received the green light following a 2018 federal government shutdown. Even then, setbacks continued. The spacecraft were initially slated to hitch a ride to space, but were subsequently “kicked off” their planned launch vehicle.

Despite these challenges, the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, and Rocket Lab of Long Beach, California, successfully delivered two identical spacecraft to Kennedy Space Center in Florida last year, completing the project on time and within budget. However, the planned launch vehicle, the New Glenn rocket from Blue Origin, wasn’t ready. This necessitated a return trip to California for storage while mission planners devised a new trajectory.

“This mission has nine lives,” Lillis remarked, drawing a comparison to the mythical resilience of cats. “It’s something we joke about on the team.”

Further delays plagued the mission just before launch. Inclement weather and a cruise ship encroaching on the restricted zone near the launchpad forced the cancellation of the first attempt. A subsequent launch was aborted due to concerns that a significant solar storm could disrupt the spacecraft’s computers.

Pioneering a New Approach to Martian Exploration

The two ESCAPADE spacecraft, nicknamed Blue and Gold after the Berkeley school colors, are each approximately the size of a mini-refrigerator. they are scheduled to enter orbit around Mars in September 2027, though the commencement of the science mission will be delayed until June 2028 due to the sun’s position obstructing communications during the initial orbital period.

This mission marks a first for planetary exploration: the simultaneous use of multiple orbiters to gather data from different locations. for the first year of its science campaign, the spacecraft will follow a “follow-the-leader” pattern along an elliptical orbit, ranging from 100 miles above the Martian surface to as far as 4,300 miles away. This configuration will allow for observations of rapid changes in magnetic fields and the solar wind – a stream of charged particles emitted by the sun.

After six months,the spacecraft will diverge into separate elliptical orbits,one extending farther out and the other moving closer to the planet. This will enable measurements of the long-distance effects of the solar wind’s impact. One spacecraft could position itself upstream of Mars to measure the incoming solar wind, while the other observes the reverberations within the planet’s magnetic field.
