Alba Flores Confronts Grief and Reclaims Her Voice in “Flowers for Antonio” Documentary
A poignant exploration of family, loss, and artistic rediscovery, the new documentary “Flowers for Antonio” offers an intimate look at actress Alba Flores’ journey to understand her late father, musician Antonio Flores, and, in the process, reclaim her own voice. The film premiered in the official out-of-competition section of the San Sebastián International Film Festival and culminates in a deeply moving tribute concert.
Bringing flowers to a deceased person is a gesture of memory, love, and reparation. For Alba Flores, that gesture was delayed for decades. When Antonio Flores died, Alba was just eight years old. “I had no goodbye from that day,” she recalls. “I didn’t go to the cemetery until I was very old.” That day also marked the end of her singing.
“Flowers for Antonio” chronicles Alba’s path to understanding her father – “his way of living and his way of dying” – and her own struggle to confront a suspended grief. It’s a story of a woman navigating the pressure of a famous family name and attempting to recover a part of herself she thought lost.
The documentary weaves together personal recollections with Antonio Flores’ iconic music and previously unseen recordings. Testimonies from musicians such as Antonio Carmona, Ariel Rot, Joaquín Sabina, and Sílvia Pérez Cruz reveal the profound impact Flores had on the Spanish music scene. The emotional weight of their words, the filmmakers emphasize, is authentic, stemming from shared memories and enduring pain.
The film also brings together the Flores family – Alba’s aunts Lolita and Rosario, along with their children Elena and Guillermo Furiase, Lola Orellana, and Pedro Lazaga, as well as Ana Villa, Antonio Flores’ former partner and Alba’s mother. Their collective memories paint a complex portrait of a beloved artist and the family left behind.
Directed by Elena Molina (known for “Remember My Name”) and Isaki Lacuesta (a Goya Award winner for “Second Prize”), the documentary builds to a powerful climax: the tribute concert held at the Vistalegre Palace in Madrid on November 24, 2023. Titled “Hearts Up,” the event provided the stage for Alba, at 33 years old, to sing one of her father’s songs once more. “If I could forget everything I was / If I could erase / Everything I saw, I wouldn’t hesitate / I wouldn’t hesitate to laugh again,” she sang, a testament to her healing and artistic rebirth.
