Salzburg Labor Leader Peter Eder to Seek SPÖ Chairmanship Amidst Political Upheaval
The President of the Salzburg Chamber of Labor, Peter Eder, has announced his intention to become the new chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) in Salzburg, a move widely anticipated within the party. Though formal election by party committees remains, Eder’s candidacy comes as the SPÖ seeks a new direction following the resignation of David Egger-Kranzinger in October 2024.
Eder revealed his plans on Friday during a press conference aboard a Salzburger Lokalbahn train, accompanied by numerous SPÖ mayors from across the state. He acknowledged a deliberate period of consideration, stating the decision was made after “intensive discussion with the family.” According to Eder, the perceived “social coldness” of the current state government ultimately solidified his resolve. “I am with the people, I understand the people, I like the people,” he emphasized. The state party conference, where the election will take place, is scheduled for June 13, 2026.
Eder expressed his hope to revitalize Salzburg’s political landscape through his leadership and approach to governance. He directly addressed the governing Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), stating, “They believe that it is an advantage for them if they badmouth others. I see it differently.” He envisions a political approach focused on collaboration and finding solutions that improve the lives of Salzburg residents.
Notably, Eder intends to continue serving as President of the Salzburg Chamber of Labor alongside his potential role as SPÖ chairman. “This is my bread and butter,” he stated, adding that he will relinquish his chairmanship of the ÖGB (Austrian Trade Union Confederation). Addressing concerns about a potential conflict of interest, Eder assured critics that party politics would not influence his work at the Chamber of Labor, while simultaneously promising to advocate for employee interests within the political sphere.
The announcement arrives during a period of heightened social unrest in Salzburg. Just this week, thousands of citizens took to the streets in the largest demonstration in decades, protesting planned cuts to care and health services implemented by the current state government. This backdrop of public dissatisfaction appears to have accelerated Eder’s decision, which was initially expected in early 2026.
However, Eder’s candidacy has already drawn sharp criticism from political opponents. Nikolaus Stampfer, regional manager of the ÖVP, accused Eder of exploiting his position at the Chamber of Labor for personal political gain, alleging a conflict of interest and misuse of employee funds. Sebastian Schwaighofer, state party secretary for the FPÖ, questioned whether Salzburg was seeking a “left-wing trade unionist” during economically challenging times.
The KPÖ Plus (Communist Party of Austria) also voiced concerns about Eder’s dual role, warning against a repeat of perceived issues with the Chamber of Commerce and the ÖVP. While the Greens praised Eder’s “courage to be at the top,” they echoed concerns about the potential for coalition-building with the FPÖ.
Currently, the SPÖ Salzburg is jointly led by state parliament members Barbara Thöny and Bettina Brandauer, alongside Eder in an interim capacity. The upcoming party conference will determine whether Eder will officially take the helm, potentially ushering in a new era for the Social Democrats in Salzburg.
