The Bands Driving the Movement
At the heart of Dallas’ Bangla underground is gonojowar, a band whose name translates to “mass uprising,” and embodies their ethos of breaking musical norms. Guitarist Rad Bin Wadud explained, “The band was all about breaking the norm.” The band’s journey began when Wadud met drummer Anwarul Abedin Typhoon at the University of north Texas’ Sound of Bengal event, where they connected over a shared love for Bangla band covers.
The lineup of Gonojowar evolved over time, adding Shahriar Firoz on bass, Sajid Hossain Sanju on guitar, and later, Sharior Tamim, completing their signature three-guitar sound. Wadud has also collaborated with guest vocalists like Mezbah, Shoyeb, and John, as the band currently searches for a permanent frontman.
Alongside Gonojowar, Aux4D stands out as another key player in the scene. The band’s name, inspired by their shared experiance living at the oxford Apartments, reflects a creative twist on their early days in the U.S. Vocalist Zahin Reshad and guitarist Anaf Mahbub initially began jamming together, later joined by Farhan Rahman on guitar and Maheer on bass. After Maheer’s studies took priority, Tanvir Imtiaz Limon stepped in as bassist, and Sajidul Hossain eventually replaced Anwarul Abedin Typhoon on drums, solidifying Aux4D’s lineup.
A Cultural Pulse in Texas
In a city where English-language music dominates, Dallas’ Bangla underground is far from silent. The scene’s first concert, Bangla Underground Volume 1, was overbooked with $5 tickets for a 100-person venue, prompting immediate demand for another show.
Nabila Nur kuhu, vocalist of Melody Lane and an organizer of Reign of Bangla Rock, emphasized the importance of Dallas as a musical hub for Bangladeshis living abroad. “We are very fortunate that Dallas is now a musical hub for all Bangladeshis that live far away from home,” she said.
Reaching a Wider Audience
The impact of the Bangla underground movement is expanding beyond its core community. Recent shows have attracted American audiences drawn to the energy and musicianship. Miguel Martin, a music major at the University of Texas at Arlington, was impressed by the precision and passion on display, noting that “Almost everyone could sing along to every song.” Colby Smith, part of UTA’s event staff, highlighted the vibrant atmosphere, stating, “The crowd danced to every song. It was warm,loud,and full of energy – just a really fun night.”
The Future of Bangla Underground
While hosting Bangla underground performances presents challenges – especially introducing heavy rock and metal to audiences accustomed to softer bangla music at community events – the scene’s momentum is undeniable. Both Gonojowar and Aux4D are focused on creating original music and planning upcoming shows. Gonojowar aims to headline their own concerts by next summer, while Aux4D is gearing up for a December performance to launch a new wave of Bangla underground shows in Dallas.
