Giessen Protests Erupt in Violence as AfD Youth Wing Launch Faces Opposition

A wave of unrest marred the founding congress of the Alternative for Germany’s (AfD) youth organization in Giessen, with authorities reporting injuries to both police officers and demonstrators amid clashes between protesters and law enforcement. The situation remains fluid, according to officials, despite a significant police presence deployed from across Germany.

Condemnation of Violence from Hesse’s Interior Minister

Hesse’s Interior Minister, Roman Poseck, swiftly and unequivocally condemned the violence that unfolded during the protests. “I strongly condemn this violence,” he emphasized, underscoring the severity of the situation. Initial reports indicate that ten police officers sustained minor injuries as demonstrators hurled bottles and stones, prompting the use of water cannons by authorities. Several protesters also reported minor injuries.

Scale of the Demonstrations and Police Response

Law enforcement initially anticipated a massive turnout, estimating up to 50,000 participants. However, the actual number of demonstrators present in Giessen appeared to be between 25,000 and 30,000, according to Poseck. A substantial police operation, involving officers from 15 federal states, was launched to maintain order and secure the event. Despite the challenges, the operation was initially deemed successful.

Concerns Over Extremist Involvement

Authorities had intelligence suggesting the presence of individuals intent on disrupting the AfD event. Poseck confirmed that the assumption that “several hundred violent demonstrators” traveled to Giessen proved accurate. Disturbingly, reports also suggest “individual attacks on people from the AfD” occurred, though details remain limited.

“Resist” Alliance and Calls for Peaceful Protest

The protest alliance “Resist” publicly announced its intention to prevent the AfD youth organization’s founding congress. The event ultimately commenced approximately two hours behind schedule. While many demonstrators engaged in peaceful protest, the presence of violent elements overshadowed the broader expression of dissent.

Balancing Protest Rights with the Rule of Law

Poseck was careful to distinguish between legitimate protest and unlawful behavior. He reiterated that attempting to enforce a party ban “through the back door” is not the role of protest groups. “I fully understand the need to demonstrate peacefully against the AfD and I have great sympathy for the people who are actively committed to our democracy,” he stated. However, he firmly drew a line, asserting that “anyone who does this with violence and violations of the law disqualifies themselves as advocates of democracy and puts themselves ‘on the same level as other extremists.’”
