Bloodlines 2 Disaster and Delays for PlayStation’s Next Big Title
Table of Contents
The video game industry faced a turbulent week, marked by the commercial failure of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 and mounting uncertainty surrounding the release of PlayStation’s highly anticipated Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Despite years of development and significant anticipation, both titles are facing substantial headwinds.
Bloodlines 2 – A $32 Million Setback for Paradox Interactive
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 has been deemed an “industrial disaster” following its launch last month, failing to meet sales expectations. According to a company release, Paradox Interactive reported that sales figures “do not correspond to our forecasts.” Data from GameDiscoverCo indicates the game has sold just over 120,000 copies on Steam, generating approximately $4 million in net revenue – insufficient to recoup development costs.
The game’s troubled 15-year development, including a reboot by The Chinese Room, contributed to the financial fallout. A senior official at Paradox Interactive acknowledged the company’s miscalculation, stating, “In hindsight, it is clear that this prevented us from properly assessing its commercial potential.” The publisher has recorded a loss of 32 million euros, attributed to the depreciation of assets related to the game’s development. Despite the disappointing performance, Paradox remains committed to delivering the two planned expansions.
The challenges stemmed from a fundamental disagreement over the game’s direction. Dan Pinchbeck, co-founder of The Chinese Room, explained in a recent podcast interview that his studio aimed to create its own vision for the franchise rather than simply finishing the work of the previous developer, Hardsuit Labs. “Taking over a project already in development is extremely delicate,” he stated. Paradox Interactive reportedly debated whether to continue branding the game as Bloodlines 2, recognizing the limitations of time and budget. “We spent entire meetings asking ourselves: ‘How do we get them to stop calling it Bloodlines 2?’ We can’t do Bloodlines 2. There isn’t enough time. There is not enough money,” Pinchbeck revealed. The damage to the franchise’s reputation, however, is already apparent.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Release Window Now in Doubt
Fans anticipating Naughty Dog’s next project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, will face a longer wait than expected. The game, which generated significant buzz at last year’s Game Awards, will not receive a new trailer at the upcoming December 11 ceremony. According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, who is generally well-informed, the previously hoped-for 2026 launch window now appears “very presumptuous.”
This delay suggests that development is progressing slower than anticipated, and PlayStation is exercising caution in managing expectations. The studio will likely focus on remasters and reissues of The Last of Us for the foreseeable future.
