Andre Russell retires from IPL, Named KKR Power Coach for 2026 Season
A legendary figure in the Indian Premier League, Andre Russell, has announced his retirement from playing in the IPL, effective immediatly. The West Indies all-rounder will transition into a coaching role with the Kolkata Knight Riders, serving as their “power coach” beginning with the 2026 season.
Russell’s decision comes after 12 seasons with the kolkata-based franchise, where he became a fan favorite for his explosive hitting and impactful all-around performances. The all-rounder explained that the thought of playing for another IPL franchise felt disloyal and unsettling. “When you go through social media, you see [othre teams’] photoshopped in different jerseys over and over again,” Russell stated.”It felt weird to see myself in any color other than purple and gold, and those thoughts went through my head and it led to a few sleepless nights.” He emphasized his desire to leave a lasting legacy and retire on his own terms, rather than fading away.
Russell’s new role as “power coach” was developed in collaboration with KKR’s leadership, including Mr. Venky mysore and Mr. Shah Rukh Khan. He believes the title perfectly encapsulates his strengths and how he can contribute to the team’s success. “When I heard the name Power Coach, I thought Andre russell was the best as the power I have when I bat, the energy I show on the field with the ball in my hands, I can definitely help in any department,” he said. He affirmed his commitment to the franchise, declaring, “Then Kolkata, I will be back. I am here to say that I will be part of KKR’s support staff as the new power coach in 2026.”
