Kohli’s Century Propels India to Victory Over South Africa in ODI Series Opener
India secured a 17-run victory over South Africa on Sunday, marking a strong start to their three-match one-day international series. The win comes after South Africa previously dominated the test matches between the two nations last week.
India’s commanding performance was largely built around a record-extending 52nd ODI century from Virat Kohli, who scored 135 runs. This milestone performance, coupled with a solid contribution from former captain Rohit Sharma (57), set the stage for a competitive total.
Dominant Batting Performance Sets the Tone
Kohli and Sharma orchestrated a crucial 136-run partnership for the second wicket, captivating the Ranchi crowd. This collaboration was instrumental in India posting a challenging 349/8 on a pitch highly favorable to batting. The partnership showcased the experience and class of the two veteran batsmen, both of whom have retired from Test and Twenty20 international cricket.
South Africa Stumbles Early in Pursuit
South Africa’s chase got off to a disastrous beginning. Harshit Rana swiftly dismissed both Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock for ducks, immediately putting the visitors on the back foot. Arshdeep Singh then claimed the wicket of Aiden Markram (7) in the fifth over, leaving South Africa reeling at 11/3.
Breetzke and Jansen Mount a Resilient Challenge
Despite the early setbacks, Matthew Breetzke (72) and Marco Jansen (70 off 39) launched a spirited counterattack, bringing South Africa back into contention. Their partnership propelled the score to 227/5 before both batsmen were dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav (4/68) in the 34th over. Yadav’s bowling proved pivotal in breaking the momentum of the South African innings.
Tight Bowling Seals the Win for India
Facing a target of 50 runs from the final six overs with only two wickets remaining, South Africa found themselves stifled by India’s disciplined bowling attack. For two consecutive overs, the Indian bowlers prevented Corbin Bosch and Nandre Burger from scoring a single boundary. This pressure forced Burger into a risky shot, resulting in his dismissal, caught by the keeper.
Bosch (67 off 51) reached his maiden 50, but his valiant effort ended in the final over when he was caught attempting a big hit, bringing South Africa’s innings to a close at 332. The Indian bowlers demonstrated exceptional composure and control during the crucial final overs, ultimately securing the victory.
The two teams will next meet on Wednesday in Raipur for the second match of the series.
