American comedian Dave Shappel was attacked on stage last night (light for Wednesday) in Los Angeles by an attacker who threw him to the ground before being caught and arrested, video footage verified by Reuters showed.
A Los Angeles police spokesman on Wednesday identified the suspect as 23-year-old Isa Lee, who was held in custody on $ 30,000 bail after being charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Lee had a dummy gun that contained a knife blade when he attacked Shappel, the spokesman said. According to online jail records, there was no court hearing scheduled for me. It was not immediately clear if Apple, 48, was injured in the incident, or what motivated it.

Videos posted on Twitter showed the attacker running to the stage and launching his upper body into Chappelle’s body, throwing his shoulder at the comedian’s ribs and chest. After the initial contact, the attacker and Apple rocked a few steps before they both fell to the floor, it seemed. The attacker then got up and ran around the stage, dodging a swarm of people for a few seconds before they attacked him near the back of the stage.
Apple performed at the venue along with other comedians as part of an 11-day comedy festival called “Netflix is a Joke.” The attack came just over a month after actor Will Smith-starred comedian Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars, an unprecedented incident at a worldwide televised event that raised concerns that performers might resist copying attacks. read more
Smith, who won the Best Actor award, was then banned from attending the Oscars for 10 years. The actor has released statements apologizing to Rock, Oscar producers, nominees and viewers after the incident. A Hollywood Bulls representative told Reuters the incident was under investigation, and declined to comment further. A Chapel agent and PR representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
