College Football Playoff Picture Shifts as Texas Tech Soars, A&M Slides in AP Poll
The race for the College Football Playoff intensified Sunday with a shakeup in the latest Associated Press poll. Texas Tech reached its highest ranking in 17 years, while Texas A&M experienced a significant drop after a loss, and a record number of Group of Five teams secured a place among the nation’s elite.
No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Indiana remain the only undefeated teams in the nation, maintaining their positions atop the poll for a seventh consecutive week as they prepare for a highly anticipated Big Ten Championship clash this Saturday. No. 3 Georgia and No. 4 Oregon each moved up one spot, but the biggest jump belonged to Texas Tech, now ranked No. 5 – their best position since November 2008.
The Aggies, following a 10-point defeat at the hands of Texas, fell four spots to No. 7. Oklahoma, Notre Dame, and Alabama rounded out the top 10, holding steady for the third week in a row. “The weekend results clearly demonstrate the volatility we’re seeing in college football this season,” a senior analyst noted.
This Saturday’s conference championship games will feature two matchups between top-10 teams. In addition to the Big Ten showdown, No. 3 Georgia will face No. 10 Alabama for the Southeastern Conference title. The Big 12 Championship will pit No. 5 Texas Tech against No. 11 BYU, marking the first championship game appearance for both programs. The Atlantic Coast Conference game will see No. 16 Virginia take on Duke, who currently holds a 7-5 record and received no votes in the poll.
A notable shift occurred in the ACC rankings, with No. 12 Miami and No. 13 Vanderbilt swapping places. The Hurricanes, riding high from a 31-point road victory over Pittsburgh, are the highest-ranked ACC team and are hoping for an at-large bid to the College Football Playoff. Vanderbilt’s slip came despite a 21-point road win against Tennessee.
James Madison continues to represent the Group of Five conferences, moving up to No. 19 and becoming the highest-ranked team from that tier. They will host Troy in the Sun Belt Championship game on Friday. Three teams from the American Athletic Conference follow closely behind: No. 20 North Texas, No. 21 Tulane, and No. 24 Navy. North Texas will visit Tulane for the American Championship game on Friday, with Tulane being the sole G5 team featured in last week’s CFP rankings.
Several teams made their return to the rankings this week. No. 22 Arizona is ranked for the first time since September 2024, fueled by a five-game winning streak and a 23-7 victory over Arizona State in the Territorial Cup. No. 23 Navy secured a spot in the Top 25 for the first time this season, achieving their highest ranking since 2019 ahead of their annual showcase game against Army on December 13th. No. 25 Missouri also rejoined the poll after a one-week absence, following a two-touchdown win over Arkansas. Tennessee, Pittsburgh, and SMU were the teams to fall out of the rankings.
The AP poll also revealed some interesting trends. Seven consecutive weeks with the same top two teams – Ohio State and Indiana – is the longest such streak since Georgia and Michigan held the top two spots for 11 weeks in 2023. The American Athletic Conference boasts three ranked teams, the most since November 20, 2022, and equaling the league record set in 2015 and 2019. The last time four Group of Five teams were ranked simultaneously was in the final poll of the 2024 season. Tennessee’s 33-week streak of appearing in the poll came to an end following their loss to Vanderbilt.
