Harlan Coben’s ‘Run Away’ Thrills London Audience Ahead of Netflix Debut
A gripping new thriller from bestselling author Harlan Coben, “Run Away,” captivated a London audience Monday night, offering a first look at the series ahead of its January 1, 2025, premiere on Netflix. The eight-episode adaptation, starring James Nesbitt, Ruth Jones, Minnie Driver, and Alfred Enoch, promises a complex narrative centered on family, secrets, and the enduring power of parental love.
A Story Rooted in Personal Experience
The series follows Simon, played by Nesbitt, as he desperately searches for his runaway daughter, Paige. According to a synopsis, the central question driving the narrative is: “How far would you go to bring her back?” Coben revealed the story’s genesis stemmed from a deeply personal experience – discovering what he believed to be drug paraphernalia belonging to his own daughter, Charlotte, now an associate producer on the show. “I found some drug paraphernalia in her room when she was a teenager. But she swears it was a friend’s pipe,” Coben recalled, adding that the incident sparked a “spiral” of worry that ultimately fueled the plot. The initial struggle to conceptualize the story found its breakthrough during a visit to New York’s Central Park. “A busker was miming a John Lennon tune. ‘And I thought, What if that’s the missing daughter,’” he explained.
From Page to Screen: A UK Setting
“Run Away” marks the 13th collaboration between Coben and Netflix, and, like many of his previous adaptations, the story has been transplanted from its original U.S. setting to the United Kingdom. Filming took place in and around Manchester and the North West of England, a decision that resonated with lead writer and executive producer Danny Brocklehurst. He jokingly remarked that he appreciated being able to film “near my house.” Coben emphasized that the series delves into the “emotional journey that the parents are going through with a child who’s suffering from addiction,” alongside the expected suspense and mystery his fans have come to anticipate.
Collaborative Spirit and Powerful Performances
The premiere screening at the BFI Southbank was followed by a Q&A session featuring Jones, Nesbitt, Coben, and Brocklehurst. Both Nesbitt and Jones praised the collaborative atmosphere on set. A veteran of Coben adaptations, Nesbitt lauded the author’s ability to craft stories centered on relatable human experiences, stating, “We talk about the universality of Harlan’s work, but I think there’s a timelessness to it as well.”
Nesbitt noted a significant departure from his previous roles in Coben’s work. “This is a character who’s a father,” he shared, adding that, as a father to daughters himself, he was able to draw upon personal experiences to inform his performance. Jones, initially apprehensive about acting alongside Nesbitt, described an immediate connection. “I was a little trepidatious about it because I have always been a big admirer of his work,” she admitted. “I was thinking, ‘God, am I going to be able to act with him?’ And then we did this scene together. … I was really nervous, but instantly we just seemed to click.”

The series explores nuanced relationships beyond the central father-daughter dynamic. Jones highlighted the unique bond between her character, Elena, and Nesbitt’s Simon, clarifying, “It’s a really lovely onscreen relationship because, well, spoiler alert, it’s not a romance, alright?” She added with a laugh, “That’s quite refreshing. It’s refreshing to see that male-female friendship.” The actress also praised the costume designer’s bold choices for Elena, noting that the unconventional attire “belie [her character and determination].”
