The AWS Summit de Madrid, aimed at developers and customers of Amazon Web Services, began this Wednesday in person after two years of the pandemic. AWS is the world leader in cloud services, with a market share of 33%, followed only by Azure. The event kicked off with a speech by Miguel Alava, director of Iberia’s AWS. He talks that he has not offered much news, but the achievement of a plan that we already knew, and the company’s focus on the launch of the Aragon region for AWS. That is, the construction of a huge data center near the city of Zaragoza, an investment of 2,500 million euros, with an impact of 1,800 million on GDP and that will generate 1,300 jobs, all in the next 10 years.

This new region of AWS It will also improve the level of customer service, not only by lowering latency, but also for highly regulated sectors that need their data physically in Spain, for which, it is expected, it will have a high impact on local businesses.

The company wants it to open its doors before the end of the year. In addition, its goal is for its data centers to work 100% with renewable energy by 2025, which is why in Spain it has invested in 12 solar plants and two wind farms, which provide 1.4 gigawatts of energy to the national grid.

Another of the classic topics covered in the opening talk was that of training, where Alava has repeatedly insisted that there is a large disconnect between the knowledge or talent needed and that availableDespite the fact that AWS has certified more than 100,000 professionals, there are still not enough technology profiles. For this reason, the firm has several programs underway, such as re/Start or in conjunction with professional training, both in Andalusia and Aragon.

Miriam McLemore, Business Strategy at AWS, has been responsible for putting the technical icing on the cake, with the news in AWS services, no less than 3,084 new features and services in the last year, driving innovation in the cloud. She has also mentioned the success of the Ec2 processors that were already announced last year: Graviton3, Trainium and Inferentia that put the focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The success stories that have accompanied the talk have been that of Melia Hotels and Mediaset, both for having recently gone through the experience of changing from a traditional architecture or one in the cloud with AWS. In the case of Melia, they changed from mainframe to AWS in 2020, which has allowed them to be more elastic and resilient, in addition to lowering costs by 60%, and an improvement of 25% in production time «In addition to the security challenges of having your own internal systems, it is also more difficult to attract talent that does not want to work in an old architecture, “said Chris Palomino, vice president of technology at Melia Hotels.

During the congress that will be held between May 4 and 5 in Madrid, we will be able to see, in addition to the AWS partners in Spain, projects as interesting as the AWS store of the future proposal: an automatic physical store, which directly recognizes the products that the customer picks up and collects, without human intervention. Or the Deep Race League, a miniature car competition that drives autonomously using AI and ML.
