Trump Nullifies Biden-Signed Documents, Sparking Legal and Political Firestorm
The 47th president has moved to invalidate all documents signed by his predecessor using an autopen device, escalating a long-running dispute over the legitimacy of the Biden administration and raising serious legal questions.
Former US President Donald Trump has taken the unprecedented step of nullifying all documents, including executive orders, contracts, and pardons, signed by Joe Biden via autopen during his time in office. The move, announced on Wednesday, December 3rd, via Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, fulfills a repeated promise to target what he calls “the entire biden crime family” and their allies.
“Any and all Documents, Proclamations, Executive Orders, Memorandums, or Contracts, signed by Order of the now infamous and unauthorized ‘AUTOPEN,’ within the Administration of Joseph R. Biden Jr., are hereby null, void, and of no further force or effect,” Trump stated. He further advised anyone receiving pardons or legal documents signed in this manner that they are “fully and completely terminated” and hold no legal weight.
The decision follows through on Trump’s long-held accusations that decisions made during the Biden administration were not genuinely authorized by the former president. He has previously suggested that Biden was either incapable of understanding the orders or unaware they were being issued on his behalf.
The Trump administration has also made symbolic gestures underscoring this rejection of the previous administration. Reports indicate that Biden’s portrait in the Presidential Walk of Fame at the White House has been replaced with an image of the autopen itself. During a recent state visit with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump reportedly showcased the “Biden autopen” prominently displayed in the White House.
The timing of this action is particularly significant given Biden’s last-minute pardons issued on his final day in office. These pardons were intended to protect family members, including his son Hunter and brother James, from potential future charges related to ongoing investigations. Additionally, pardons were granted to members of Congress who served on the January 6th investigation committee, and also to anthony Fauci, the former Director of Infectious diseases.
An autopen is a device used to automatically reproduce a signature, frequently enough employed when a large volume of signatures is required or when a principal is unable to physically sign documents. While the use of autopens is not inherently illegal, Trump’s decision to invalidate all documents signed in this manner raises significant legal challenges.
The move has been met with enthusiastic support from Trump’s Republican allies. The Heritage Foundation’s oversight Project, dedicated to scrutinizing the Biden administration, expressed gratitude on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Thank you President Trump for taking our historic autopen investigation and findings seriously and ordering your Administration to take action.” Similarly, GOP-led House Oversight committee chair James Comer publicly applauded Trump’s decision, declaring Biden’s autopen actions “NULL AND VOID.”
However, Biden himself has vehemently denied claims that his aides acted without his knowledge. in an interview with The New York Times in July, he asserted, “I made every single one of those,” referring to the pardons and commutations. He dismissed those making such claims as “liars,” adding, “They know it.”
Trump’s actions are widely viewed as part of a broader effort to delegitimize the Biden administration and perpetuate claims of election fraud following his loss in the 2020 election. This latest move appears to be an attempt to rewrite the ancient record and erase the impact of his predecessor’s policies. The legal ramifications of this unprecedented decision remain
