“Dunaj” Series Finale Looms: Shocking Return and Rising Stakes in Season 12
Table of Contents
The popular Slovak historical drama, “Dunaj,” is heading toward its conclusion with a shortened 12th season, set to wrap up in early December. The series, known for its intricate plotlines and compelling characters, is navigating a competitive television landscape and a dramatic shift in its production schedule.
A Shorter Season Amidst Network Competition
The decision to shorten the season stems from a strategic shift by Markíza, the broadcasting network, which opted to launch the new season in September rather than its traditional August slot. This change was partially influenced by a competitive battle with JOJ and its series “Hospital.” According to reports from Mediaboom, the network aims to avoid extending the series into the holiday season.
Beloved Character Returns From the Brink
In a surprising twist, Jana Pilzová, portraying Mrs. Mária, has returned to “Dunaj.” The character, previously believed to have perished in a concentration camp, is revealed to have survived. Viewers recently witnessed Astrid discovering a photograph of Mrs. Mária – the former owner of the boarding house and grandmother of David – prompting a poignant exchange. Mrs. Mária recounts a harrowing experience, revealing she was spared from extermination in Auschwitz by being selected as a maid for German officers.
“There was a very small percentage of Jewish women who survived the concentration camp thanks to the fact that the Germans living there chose them as maids,” a senior writer for “Dunaj” explained to Markíza.sk. “In fact, they were strong and young women, those of our Maria’s age, who were immediately taken for extermination. We used this motive to save our Maria, and we admit that we turned a blind eye to her age, so that we could show that she did not perish in the camp with those with whom she came in the transport.” The return of Mrs. Mária offers a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness of the war.
Escalating Tensions and False Accusations
The narrative is thickening with escalating tensions and a web of deceit. Guardsman Jula has been promoted to first lieutenant Šándor, and his time on the front lines is exacerbating his instability. Meanwhile, Walter has been accused of involvement in the assassination attempt on Hitler.
In a desperate bid for freedom, Walter’s wife, Helga, frames Astrid for the crime. Helga steals a crucial briefcase – originally purchased by Astrid in the Danube for her uncle – that was also used in the assassination attempt. Astrid is subsequently arrested, and Tereza, a reluctant witness, is forced to testify against her, confirming Astrid’s purchase of the incriminating briefcase. The Gestapo is now actively pursuing Tereza as well.
Walter’s freedom comes at a steep price, leaving Astrid in a precarious position and setting the stage for a dramatic climax as the season progresses. The fate of key characters hangs in the balance as “Dunaj” races toward its finale.
