A new generation of filmmaking talent is emerging from the family of Kate Winslet, with both her son and daughter making significant strides in the entertainment world. The celebrated actress recently shared insights into the burgeoning careers of her children, Joe Anders and Mia Threapleton, and the supportive environment she and their fathers have fostered.
A Family Affair: “Goodbye June” Premiere
On Wednesday, Winslet walked the red carpet alongside her 21-year-old son, Joe Anders, for the premiere of her latest film, “Goodbye June.” The event marked a particularly special occasion for the pair, as they collaborated on the project – a milestone representing Winslet’s directorial debut and Anders’s first credited screenplay.
From Childhood Writing to Screenwriting
Winslet revealed that Anders’s passion for writing began at a young age. Speaking last month on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, she explained, “He started writing this when he was 19. He had always written all of his life. So, it didn’t surprise me that he wanted to explore the idea of screenwriting.” Anders, demonstrating both humility and confidence, reportedly asked his mother to read his initial draft with a simple request: “‘And if it’s crap, just lie.’”
Winslet was deeply moved by the script, describing it as “funny and touching and real and chaotic and messy in that way that family are.” She immediately recognized its potential, telling her son, “I really think this could be a film.” The screenplay draws heavily from Anders’s personal experiences, specifically his relationship with his grandmother – Winslet’s mother – and the profound impact of her loss during his teenage years. “The most seismic thing that had happened in his life was the loss of his grandmother when he was a teenager, my mother. So, he took that as his emotional backdrop,” Winslet shared. Joe Anders’s father is acclaimed director Sam Mendes.
Mia Threapleton’s Rising Star
Winslet’s daughter, Mia Threapleton, is also establishing herself as an actress. In May, she discussed her breakout role in Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme” with “Extra’s” Mona Kosar Abdi. Threapleton’s parents, Winslet and director Jim Threapleton, intentionally created a supportive environment without pushing her toward a career in showbiz.
Threapleton emphasized the practical lessons instilled by her parents. “The only thing that was really impressed on me from any point was just that it’s really hard work,” she stated. Her parents also maintained a clear separation between their professional and family lives, treating a film set with the same seriousness as any other focused workspace. “It’s sort of the equivalent of a lawyer taking their child into a courtroom, because it really is a place of focus and concentration,” she explained. Despite the demands of the industry, Threapleton’s parents have consistently encouraged her to pursue her passion, offering unwavering support with a simple mantra: “Yeah, keep doing it if it’s making you happy, keep doing it.”
