AI’s Looming Reality: Why Dismissing progress is a Hazardous Delusion

From ChatGPT’s Debut too the “AI Slop” Era
Three years ago,the launch of ChatGPT captivated the world,sparking unprecedented investment and excitement in the field of artificial intelligence. Today, while still in its early stages of progress, public sentiment has dramatically soured. This shift began this summer with the release of GPT-5 by OpenAI, which received mixed reviews, especially from casual users who focused on superficial flaws rather than underlying capabilities.
As then, commentators and influencers have increasingly declared that AI progress is slowing, that “scaling has plateaued,” and that the initial hype was overblown. This narrative is reinforced by the proliferation of low-quality, AI-generated content – dubbed “AI slop” – flooding the internet. Though, these criticisms frequently enough miss the point. The current generation of models, while imperfect, represents a significant leap forward, and the underlying technology continues to evolve at an astounding rate. the recent advancements demonstrated by Gemini 3 serve as a prime example. This growth is reflected in investment trends as well: McKinsey recently reported that 20% of organizations already derive tangible value from generative AI, while a Deloitte survey indicates that 85% of organizations increased their AI investment in 2025, with 91% planning further increases in 2026.
The Dangers of AI Denial
So why the widespread skepticism? According to a veteran computer scientist and research engineer with a career dating back to 1989, we’ve entered a state of “collective AI denial,” clinging to narratives that alleviate our anxieties in the face of compelling evidence.”Denial is the first stage of grief,” the expert explained, “and a reasonable reaction to the disturbing prospect that we humans may soon lose cognitive supremacy.”
This dismissal, the expert argues, is a societal defense mechanism against the realization that AI is rapidly approaching a point where it will outperform humans in moast cognitive tasks – solving problems faster, more accurately, and even more creatively. The assertion that uniquely human qualities like creativity and emotional intelligence will remain beyond AI’s reach is increasingly unsupported by evidence. Today’s AI models already generate content with a speed and variation exceeding individual human capacity.
The Looming AI Manipulation Problem
Perhaps even more concerning is the potential for AI to surpass human capabilities in emotional intelligence. AI systems are rapidly developing the ability to read our emotions with greater accuracy than humans, analyzing subtle cues in micro-expressions, vocal patterns, and even breathing. as AI assistants become integrated into our daily lives through smartphones and wearable devices, they will continuously monitor our emotional reactions, building predictive models of our behavior.
Without robust regulation – which appears increasingly unlikely – these models could be exploited to target us with individually optimized persuasion, a phenomenon known as the AI manipulation problem. This creates an asymmetric dynamic where AI can accurately read us, while we struggle to understand its motivations. The illusion of warmth and empathy projected by photorealistic AI agents could easily sway our perspectives, as our emotional responses to faces are deeply ingrained reflexes.
We are quickly approaching a world where many of the faces we encounter will be those of AI agents, potentially designed to exploit our vulnerabilities. to believe this is just another tech cycle is, quite simply, wishful thinking.
A New planet Forming
The massive investment pouring into AI isn’t driven by hype, but by the expectation that it will permeate every aspect of daily life. These systems will assist, teach, and influence us, reshaping our lives at an accelerating pace.We are not witnessing an AI bubble, but rather “a new planet forming, a molten world rapidly taking shape, and it will solidify into a new AI-powered society.”
Denial will not halt this progression; it will only leave us less prepared for the risks.
