Gemini Surpasses ChatGPT, Threatening Apple’s Position in AI Smartphone Race

The rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the smartphone landscape, with Google’s Gemini model demonstrably outperforming OpenAI’s ChatGPT and potentially giving Samsung a significant edge over Apple.

Recent performance evaluations indicate a clear shift in AI dominance. According to industry analysis released on Thursday, Gemini 3, launched last month, has exceeded the capabilities of GPT-5 in key benchmark tests. On the AI model evaluation platform LM Arena, Gemini 3 achieved a 37.5% correct answer rate in “The Last Test of Humanity,” surpassing GPT-5’s 31.6%. Furthermore, Gemini 3 outperformed ChatGPT with an 81% accuracy rate in multimodal tests—assessing the understanding of both text and images—compared to ChatGPT’s 76%.

AI Market Share Shifts Favor Google

This performance gap is already impacting market share. ChatGPT’s dominance in generated AI, which stood at 87% a year ago, has declined to 71.3% as of the beginning of this month. Simultaneously, Gemini’s share has nearly tripled, rising from 5.7% to 15.1% during the same period. This trend suggests a growing consumer preference for the capabilities offered by Google’s AI.

Samsung Poised to Benefit from Google Partnership

The implications for the smartphone market are substantial. Samsung Electronics, leveraging Google’s Android operating system, is integrating Gemini as a default AI across its mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets, and extended reality (XR) headsets. This strategic alignment positions Samsung to capitalize on Gemini’s superior performance.

Apple Faces Challenges with OpenAI Integration

Apple, in contrast, formed an alliance with OpenAI last year, aiming to incorporate ChatGPT into its iPhones. However, the integration of ChatGPT with Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, has faced delays, with a full release now anticipated next year. “The number of users who are dissatisfied is increasing,” as ChatGPT and Siri are not yet functioning seamlessly together.

Real-World Performance Highlights Samsung’s Advantage

The disparity in AI capabilities is becoming increasingly apparent to consumers. Experts on YouTube and IT review sites are noting Samsung’s advancements in AI technology. A recent viral video featuring Nick Fury, the character from the “Avengers” series, removing an eyepatch using AI, vividly illustrates this difference. While the Galaxy smartphone successfully completed the task, the iPhone either failed to remove the eyepatch or distorted the user’s face.

“If Apple fails to properly implement AI,” one industry insider stated, “it may lose its status as a leading mobile company.” The competitive pressure is mounting, and Apple’s ability to deliver a compelling AI experience will be critical to maintaining its market position.
