UBTech Defends ‘Robot Army’ Video Amid Authenticity Claims
A Chinese robotics firm is pushing back against accusations that a viral video showcasing hundreds of humanoid robots was fabricated, highlighting a growing debate over the rapid advancement – and potential exaggeration – of robotics technology. UBTech, a leading player in the field, released additional footage in an attempt to quell skepticism surrounding its Walker S2 robots, designed for deployment in factories and warehouses.
The initial video, shared by UBTech last month, depicted a synchronized “army” of Walker S2 robots capable of autonomous battery swapping for continuous 24/7 operation. The scene evoked imagery from science fiction, prompting widespread attention and excitement about the future of industrial automation.
“A huge milestone has been reached,” UBTech announced on its YouTube channel. “The world’s first mass delivery of a humanoid robot has been completed. Hundreds of UBTech Walker S2 robots have been delivered to partners. The future of industrial automation has arrived. Go for the transformation.”
However, the celebratory announcement was quickly met with scrutiny from within the tech community. Brett Adcock, CEO of US-based humanoid robot company Figure, publicly questioned the video’s authenticity, alleging it was created using computer-generated imagery (CGI).
Adcock pointed to inconsistencies in light reflections as evidence of manipulation. “Look at the light reflections on the heads of these robots and compare them to the ones behind them,” he stated. “The front is real, everything behind is fake. If you see a robot’s head reflected in a bunch of ceiling lights, that’s a clear sign of CGI.”
In response to the growing doubts, UBTech released a behind-the-scenes video featuring original sound and a seamless background, aiming to demonstrate the reality of its production process. A company representative asserted that the new footage “proves the authenticity of the images.”
UBTech Chief Brand Officer Tan Minh attributed the skepticism to a perceived lack of understanding regarding China’s manufacturing prowess and the efficiency of its supply chains. He extended an invitation to critics to visit China and “see for themselves the rapid progress in humanoid robotics.”
The company reports that production of its humanoid robots has been accelerating since November, transitioning from prototype development to practical applications. UBTech aims to manufacture 5,000 robots annually by 2026, doubling that output to 10,000 units per year by 2027 to meet increasing market demand.
This incident is not isolated. Previously, electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng was compelled to disassemble its Iron robot to demonstrate that its female robot model was not a disguised human. This pattern suggests a broader sensitivity surrounding the presentation of robotics advancements, particularly from Chinese companies.
Experts indicate that China is currently at the forefront of robotics development, fueled by substantial government investment and favorable policies for startups in the sector. The country’s ambition to dominate this emerging technology is evident, but the recent controversy underscores the importance of transparency and verifiable evidence in showcasing these advancements.
