Düsseldorf is significantly expanding its resources for individuals experiencing homelessness in the vicinity of its main train station, with a focus on providing safe, warm shelter during the upcoming winter months. The city’s initiatives aim to address both immediate needs and long-term stability in a challenging urban environment.
The city administration announced plans to establish a heated lounge tent at Moscow Street 23, the site of a former residential complex, beginning December 13, 2025. This tent, equipped with radiant heaters and mobile heaters, will serve as a flexible overflow space for existing daytime support services, activating when regular capacity is reached.
Stabilizing the Station Area Through Collaboration
The efforts are being undertaken in conjunction with the “Security in the Station Surroundings” project, launched in September 2024.This collaborative initiative, involving the Düsseldorf Police Headquarters, the Federal Police, and city officials, has already yielded positive results in improving security, order, and cleanliness around the station. A formal cooperation agreement was signed on September 24, 2024, by Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller, Police Chief miriam Brauns, and Helge Scharfscheer, Vice President of the Federal Police Directorate in Sankt Augustin.
“The project’s self-reliant structure allows for swift and targeted implementation of measures,” a senior official stated, emphasizing the close cooperation with partners like Deutsche Bahn, Rheinbahn, social institutions, residents, and businesses. The project builds upon successful models like the Crime Prevention Council and the Security Conference.
Eisenstrasse Redevelopment and Complete Support
Further bolstering these efforts, the municipal accommodation facility on Eisenstrasse is undergoing a comprehensive redevelopment. The goal is to create a centralized support structure offering a wide range of services, including medical care, psychosocial counseling, and dedicated relaxation areas. The plan emphasizes a phased approach to ensure rapid assistance and the effective use of both indoor and outdoor spaces.
Currently, individuals residing at Eisenstrasse will be relocated to other municipal facilities to facilitate the restructuring. city officials have assured that this transition will be conducted in an orderly manner, with continued support provided to all affected individuals.
Temporary Structures Dismantled
As part of the ongoing adjustments, temporary container structures erected at Immermannhof – originally intended as an alternative location for Worringer Platz – will be dismantled by December 9, 2025. This move reflects a shift towards more permanent and integrated solutions.
