Colombo: Pro-ruling party candidate Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has won the Sri Lanka Barley Deputy Speaker election. Through this, President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has proved that he has the majority strength in the midst of a severe crisis.
Sri Lanka is mired in various problems, including a shortage of foreign exchange, rising prices and a power outage. Following this, the people have been fighting for the resignation of both President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Meanwhile, members of the ruling coalition, led by former President Sirisena, have resigned. The Deputy Speaker of the party Ranjith Siyambalapitiya also resigned.
In this, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, who was contesting for the post of Deputy Speaker again, got 148 votes and Imtiaz Bakhir Maraikkayar, who contested against him, got 65 votes. Three votes were declared invalid. Following this, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena declared Ranjith Siyambalapitiya as the winner.
Opposition leader Sajid Premadasa said, “We stopped Imtiaz from contesting because it was revealed that the ruling coalition would support the government mercenary Ranjith.” Political critics say President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who has been facing strong opposition from the people, has proved that he has the strength of a majority.
