A former major league standout, Albert abreu, has agreed to a deal with the Chunichi Dragons of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league, according to reports from ESPN’s Enrique Rojas. This move comes after a challenging season in the American minor league system, dashing his hopes for a return to the majors in 2024.
From Yankee Stadium to Japan: A Career in Transition
Abreu, known for his high-velocity pitching during his time with the New York Yankees, has also played for the Texas Rangers and Kansas City royals throughout his major league career. He accumulated 108 appearances across those teams, posting a career ERA of 4.58 with 6 wins and 5 losses.During his four seasons with the Yankees, the right-hander pitched 122.2 innings across 97 games, maintaining a 4.70 ERA.
Last year, Abreu took his talents to Japan, joining the Seibu Lions. He excelled in the Pacific League, recording a remarkable 2.39 ERA and securing 28 saves – the second-most in the league. Despite his success and expressed desire to return to MLB,the Lions did not offer him a contract extension, making him a free agent.
A Disappointing Return to the US
Hoping to reignite his major league career, Abreu signed a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds earlier this year, receiving an invitation to spring training. Though, his performance at the Triple-A level proved insufficient. In 17 games, he pitched just 23.1 innings, allowing 29 hits and 15 runs. His ERA ballooned to 5.79, with a concerning 1.93 on-base percentage per inning. Ultimately, the Reds released him in mid-June.
New Beginnings with the Chunichi Dragons
Now, Abreu is returning to japan, but with a different organization. While he could have rejoined the Seibu Lions, he has opted to sign with the Chunichi Dragons. According to Japanese media outlet Sponichi Annex, the Dragons are initially considering utilizing Abreu as a setup pitcher. However, Abreu’s representatives have indicated he remains capable of starting, and a final decision on his role will be made following an evaluation of the team’s needs and his performance during spring training.
The Chunichi Dragons are hoping Abreu can recapture the form he displayed with the Seibu Lions and bolster their pitching staff. This move represents a new chapter for the veteran pitcher as he continues his professional baseball journey.
