Red Bull Racing is undergoing a notable leadership shift as Helmut Marko, the team’s influential auto racing advisor, announces his retirement at the age of 82. Marko’s departure marks the end of a 20-year tenure during which he played a pivotal role in the success of four-time Formula 1 champions Sebastian Vettel and Max verstappen.
A Legacy of Championship Success
Marko’s impact on Formula 1 extends beyond mere team strategy. He was instrumental in preparing Verstappen to become the youngest driver in F1 history, debuting at just 17 years old in 2015. The pair forged a close relationship that continued throughout their championship-winning years. Verstappen expressed his gratitude on Instagram, stating, “Thank you, Helmut. We’ve achieved everything we ever dreamed of together.I’m forever grateful for your belief in me.”
Shifting Sands at Red Bull Racing
Marko’s exit further reshapes the leadership landscape at Red Bull, following the ousting of longtime team principal Christian Horner in July, replaced by Laurent Mekies. The departure of renowned car design great Adrian newey, who will join Aston Martin in 2026, adds to the sense of transition within the team.
Marko’s decision comes after Verstappen narrowly missed securing a fifth title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last week. “Narrowly missing out on the world championship this season has moved me deeply and made it clear to me that now is the right moment for me personally to end this very long, intense, and prosperous chapter,” Marko said in a statement. He expressed confidence in the team’s future, believing they will “be fighting for both world championship titles again next year.”
From Driver to Kingmaker
Before his influential role behind the scenes, Marko was a Formula 1 driver himself in the early 1970s. His racing career was tragically altered when a rock pierced his helmet visor, leaving him blinded in one eye. This experience shaped his approach to team politics and driver development, especially during moments when Verstappen’s confidence in the team wavered earlier this year. He maintained a close relationship with Dietrich Mateschitz, the late co-founder of Red Bull.
A Controversial,Yet Effective,Approach
Marko’s direct and frequently enough critical style sometimes sparked controversy. In 2023, he issued an apology to then-Red Bull driver Sergio Perez for comments that alluded to Perez’s Mexican heritage as a factor in inconsistent on-track performance. Despite these instances, his bluntness was often seen as a key component of his effectiveness.
The Red Bull Driver Development Program
For two decades, Marko oversaw red Bull’s thorough driver development program, nurturing talent through junior series to Formula 1 debuts with teams known as Toro Rosso, AlphaTauri, and Racing Bulls. The program has launched the careers of 20 drivers who have reached Formula 1, including British rookie Arvid Lindblad, slated to debut with Racing Bulls in 2026.
while drivers like Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda faced challenges alongside Verstappen this year, the program continues to promote promising young talent, with Isack Hadjar being the latest graduate.
