Grenoble Hockey Star Pierre Crinon Apologizes for On-Ice Violence, Pledges to Champion Sportsmanship
Following a seven-match suspension, Pierre Crinon, a player for the Brûleurs de Loups ice hockey team, publicly addressed the violent altercation that occurred during a match against the Ducs d’Angers ten days ago. Crinon conceded he “crossed a limit that no player should cross” and announced his commitment to actively work towards preventing violence in sport.
The incident, which took place during a championship meeting, saw Crinon penalized for a violent charge and multiple punches directed at Mathew O’Connor, the Angers goalkeeper, and Robin Gaborit, the team’s captain. The Magnus League’s Commission for Infringements of the Rules of the Game (CIRJ) swiftly responded with a seven-match suspension. O’Connor has since filed a formal complaint and remains on sick leave as a result of the injuries sustained during the game.
In a statement shared on Instagram, Crinon described his remarks as “sincere and lucid,” reflecting on a “succession of gestures [he] deeply regrets.” He acknowledged the severity of his actions, stating, “I crossed a line that no player should cross. These actions are unacceptable, injured an opponent, endangered another player, shocked many people and damaged the image of our sport.”
Beyond accepting the disciplinary measures imposed by the league, Crinon intends to take proactive steps to address the issue of violence in sports. He announced his intention to contribute to the Brûleurs de Loups endowment fund, specifically to support educational initiatives focused on violence prevention. He also expressed a desire to become involved in youth refereeing programs, aiming to foster a more respectful and controlled environment at the grassroots level.
“This episode must become a real tipping point in the way I approach my job and my responsibilities,” Crinon stated, emphasizing his commitment to personal growth and accountability. He concluded his statement with a direct apology to the affected players from Angers, his club, the French national team, the hockey community, and his family.
