Bern’s Engeriedspital to End Inpatient Services, Consolidating Care at Lindenhofspital

The Lindenhof Group will cease inpatient services at the Engeriedspital in Bern beginning in 2026, transferring surgery, internal medicine, and palliative care to the Lindenhofspital. The move, announced Tuesday, reflects broader challenges facing healthcare providers, including staffing shortages and economic pressures.
Shift in Care Delivery for Bern Residents
The decision impacts approximately 78 beds currently allocated at the Engeriedspital, though the average daily occupancy in 2025 was 41. According to a company release, the Lindenhof Group cited a confluence of factors driving the consolidation, including a shortage of skilled workers, increasing economic pressure, and evolving regulatory requirements.
This restructuring doesn’t signal a complete closure of the Engeried facility. Outpatient physiotherapy services will be relocated to the Lindenhof and Sonnenhof Hospitals, while outpatient radiology will continue to be offered at Engeried. Importantly, the office of the Bern Oncology Center and affiliated physician practices will remain on site. The Lindenhof Group is currently evaluating long-term options for the Engeriedspital property.
Workforce Transition and Hospital Capacity
The Lindenhof Group has emphasized a commitment to its workforce during this transition. Over 80% of Engeriedspital employees will be retained within the larger Lindenhof Group, with “solutions that were satisfactory for both sides” reached, according to a media office statement. The transition will also be impacted by regular retirements and some voluntary resignations.
This consolidation reflects the varying capacities of the Lindenhof Group’s three hospitals. In 2024, the Engeriedspital treated approximately 4,000 inpatients, compared to 6,000 at the Sonnenhof and nearly 20,000 at the Lindenhof. The Lindenhof Group as a whole reported a profit in 2024, suggesting a financially stable foundation for these strategic adjustments.
The move underscores a growing trend in healthcare toward consolidating specialized services in larger facilities to improve efficiency and address workforce challenges. While the Engeriedspital will no longer offer inpatient care, its continued role in outpatient services and oncology support ensures ongoing access to vital healthcare resources for the Bern community.
