Crystal Palace Downs Shelbourne in UEFA Conference League Clash
Shelbourne’s inaugural UEFA Conference League campaign hit a roadblock Thursday as Crystal Palace secured a dominant 3-0 victory at a rain-soaked Tallaght Stadium. Despite a spirited atmosphere and a determined effort from the League of Ireland side, Oliver Glasner’s Premier League outfit proved too strong, with first-half goals from Christantus Uche, Eddie Nketiah, and Yeremy Pino sealing the result.
Shels manager Joey O’Brien had urged his team to concentrate on their own performance, rather than being intimidated by Palace’s reputation. However, the challenge of facing a top-flight English side ultimately proved insurmountable. The Eagles, currently fourth in the Premier League table, capitalized on their opportunities to return to south London with all three points.
The match unfolded before a packed venue, with the anticipation palpable despite the inclement weather. A significant contingent of Palace supporters created a vibrant atmosphere in the south stand, while former Shelbourne manager Damien Duff was spotted among the home fans.
O’Brien made three changes to the side that lost 2-0 to AZ Alkmaar two weeks prior, bringing in John Martin, Evan Caffrey, and Sean Boyd. Shelbourne’s European journey to date has been marked by narrow defeats, securing only one point from their opening match against BK Hacken. In contrast, Palace entered the contest with a mixed European record, boasting two wins and two losses alongside their strong domestic form.
Palace quickly asserted their dominance, launching a series of attacks from the kickoff. However, it was a moment of incisive passing that unlocked the Shelbourne defense. A line-breaking pass from captain Marc Guehi found Daichi Kamada, who swiftly played through Eddie Nketiah. Nketiah then squared the ball for Uche to confidently slot the ball into the bottom corner, opening the scoring for the visitors.
The Londoners continued to press, and Nketiah soon doubled their lead. A misjudged header from Evan Caffrey fell into the path of Yeremy Pino, who drove towards the Shelbourne goal and set up Uche. Although Uche’s shot initially hit the post, Nketiah was on hand to tap in the rebound.
Shelbourne attempted to respond, with Kerr McInroy firing a shot from distance that sailed over the crossbar. However, Palace quickly extended their advantage. Pino, displaying impressive footwork, glided past Kameron Ledwidge before calmly picking his spot in the bottom corner, making it 3-0 before halftime.
Glasner made three substitutions at halftime, bringing on experienced players Will Hughes, Jefferson Lerma, and Romain Esse in place of Wharton, Pino, and Kamada. The second half continued to favor the visitors, with Nketiah almost adding another goal, only to be denied by a smart save from Wessel Speel.
Shelbourne showed glimpses of attacking intent, with McInroy delivering a dangerous cross that narrowly evaded Sean Boyd, although the offside flag was raised. As the game progressed, Palace continued to threaten, with a shot from Esse striking both posts but failing to cross the line. Late in the game, Boyd had a header from a free kick saved by Walter Benitez.
Despite the defeat, Shelbourne will look to regroup ahead of their next Conference League fixture against NK Celje in Slovenia next Thursday, a side that previously defeated Shamrock Rovers in October.
