Nevada County Residents Targeted by Inheritance Scam via Mail
Nevada county authorities are alerting residents to a sophisticated mail scam promising a considerable inheritance in exchange for personal information.
Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) adn the Nevada County Adult Services Department are jointly warning residents about a new scam targeting individuals with the false promise of a meaningful inheritance. The scam,delivered through the postal service,attempts to trick recipients into divulging personal details by claiming they are eligible to receive funds from an alleged estate.
According to reports, vulnerable clients of Adult services have recently received official-looking letters purportedly from a legal office. These letters notify recipients of an estate – stemming from a life insurance policy with a value of approximately $10 million – in which they may be able to claim an inheritance. The letters detail that the deceased former client had a “payable upon death” policy and, due to the absence of direct next-of-kin, funds will be distributed to individuals with “surname similarity and shared nationality” to the deceased. The proposed distribution allocates 10% of the funds to charitable organizations, with the remaining 90% split between the law firm and the letter recipient.
Authorities are urging residents to be vigilant and aware of several red flags associated with this type of scam, including:
- A foreign address and phone number requesting contact outside of the united States.
- Pressure to respond quickly to the offer.
