Netflix has officially announced the premiere date for the highly anticipated second season of its Devil May Cry adaptation: May 12, 2026. The news, revealed via press release following its initial unveiling at the 2025 Game Awards, finally answers the question fans have been asking since a striking teaser trailer featuring Dante and Vergil debuted in August.
The first season of the animated series garnered critical acclaim, achieving a remarkable 75 on Metacritic – a score comparable to that of Emmy Award-winning dramas like The Pitt (77). This strong reception sets high expectations for the continuation of the story.
A War Between Worlds
Season 2 promises a dramatic escalation of the conflict, with the official synopsis detailing a “war between worlds” ignited by a confrontation between Dante and his estranged twin brother, Vergil. The narrative will delve into sinister forces attempting to breach the barrier between the human and demon realms, placing the fate of both worlds in the hands of Dante, a demon-hunter unaware of the immense responsibility he carries.
The series, based on the popular Capcom video game franchise, is helmed by showrunner Adi Shankar, with animation provided by Studio Mir. The voice cast includes Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante, Robbie Daymond as Vergil, and Scout Taylor-Compton as Lady.
Shankar’s Vision for Season 2
Shankar, a self-proclaimed “OG Devil May Cry fan” since 2001, has emphasized his deep connection to the source material. He previously shared with CBR that the game serves as his “compass” and that the series is intended as a “love letter” to the franchise.
Speaking to Esquire, Shankar revealed ambitious plans for the new season, stating his intention to significantly expand upon the foundation laid in Season 1. “My plan was always to build and expand Devil May Cry. Season 1 had to be the gateway drug, but season 2, the storytelling is going to pivot,” he explained. “Season 2 is going to be different, stylistically and tonally, from season 1. Virgil is a big, very important character. It’s essentially a new show.”
Shankar also expressed a desire to surpass the viewership of the critically acclaimed animated series Arcane, stating, “I want to body Arcane, surpass it in viewership… Arcane is the Joker lighting cash on fire, and it’s great. With season 2 of Devil May Cry, I want to beat that. Show up to a tank fight with a water balloon and destroy the tank. Because that’s cool.”
The official social media account for the series shared the release date alongside a still image featuring Dante and Vergil, further fueling anticipation among fans.
Devil May Cry returns for its second season on May 12, 2026, promising a thrilling continuation of the demon-hunting saga.
