Massive Fire Destroys Hundreds of Kiosks at Jakarta’s Kramat Jati Market

A devastating fire ripped through the Kramat Jati Central Market in East Jakarta on Monday morning, destroying at least 350 kiosks and disrupting a vital hub for food distribution in the Indonesian capital. The blaze, which ignited in the Fruit Section, prompted a swift response from firefighters and market security, preventing wider devastation.
The fire was first reported around 7:15 a.m. local time (GMT+7), triggering panic among traders as flames quickly engulfed hundreds of stalls in Block C2. “The fire swept through the Fruit Section, causing panic among traders as hundreds of kiosks were engulfed,” a senior official stated.
Rapid Response Limits Damage
Despite the scale of the incident, authorities were able to contain the fire within an hour. Firefighters and the market’s internal security team worked collaboratively to prevent the flames from spreading to other sections of the sprawling market complex. “The fire was fully extinguished by 8:00 a.m., and cooling operations are still underway,” said the President Director of Perumda Pasar Jaya.
Crews remained on scene to monitor for and extinguish any remaining hotspots that could potentially reignite the blaze. Cooling operations, which began at 8:20 a.m., involved inspecting rooftops, narrow spaces between structures, and removing charred debris to accelerate the cooling process.
Extensive Firefighting Effort
The East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat) mobilized a significant force to combat the fire, deploying 95 personnel and 19 fire engines. According to the agency’s Head of Operations, “We dispatched 19 fire engines and 95 personnel from East Jakarta.” The response was bolstered by support from central and South Jakarta fire departments, with 16 engines originating from East Jakarta, two from the central agency, and one from South Jakarta.
The initial alert came from residents who personally informed authorities at 7:24 a.m., and fire crews arrived on the scene just four minutes later, demonstrating a rapid and effective emergency response. Joint teams prioritized extinguishing the flames, securing the perimeter, and safeguarding adjacent kiosks.
The incident underscores the vulnerability of large market areas to fire and the critical importance of robust fire prevention and rapid response capabilities. While the full extent of the economic impact is still being assessed, the destruction of 350 kiosks represents a significant loss for the traders and a potential disruption to Jakarta’s food supply chain.
