Cuban Baseball League Modifies Regulations to Ensure Tournament Completion

The 64th National Baseball Series (SNB) will undergo significant regulatory changes to address a backlog of games and guarantee the championship concludes before international player commitments begin, according to a statement released today by the National Baseball Commission. These adjustments prioritize finishing the domestic season and ensuring Cuban players are available for both club and country.

The changes, reported by PL, come as a direct response to “the number of matches not played” and the looming international baseball calendar, which begins on January 23, 2026.

Prioritizing Key Matchups and Elite League Qualification

According to an official note, modifications have been applied to regulations concerning unplayed and suspended games, as well as the playoff structure. The focus will now be on completing only those games that directly impact classification or access to the top two positions in the league standings. This is crucial, as these positions secure direct qualification for the IV Elite League of Cuban Baseball.

The recovery of these critical games will begin on December 19, and will proceed regardless of the original suspension order. “Changes have been applied to the regulations of the 64 SNB regarding games not held, sealed and for the play off stage,” a senior official stated.

Playoff Schedule Adjustments and Format Changes

The postseason is also facing adjustments. Playoff games are slated to begin three days after the completion of the recovery games, provided there is sufficient time to conclude the quarterfinals before December 29. If the schedule doesn’t allow, the quarterfinals will commence on January 4, 2026.

Beyond the scheduling changes, the structure of the playoffs will also be streamlined. Both the quarterfinal and semifinal stages will be shortened to best-of-five subseries – meaning the first team to win three games advances. However, the championship final will retain its original best-of-seven format, requiring four wins to claim the title.

Player Availability for International Competition

The National Commission has also addressed potential conflicts with international events. A firm stance has been taken to prioritize the domestic championship. “If the playoffs extend beyond January 23 and coincide with international events, no player from the teams involved would be summoned to those competitions abroad,” the commission warned. This decision underscores the importance placed on completing the SNB season and ensuring its integrity.

These changes represent a significant effort to navigate a challenging situation and ensure a successful conclusion to the 64th National Baseball Series. The adjustments aim to balance the demands of the domestic league with the international aspirations of Cuban baseball players.
