French Court Convicts Man of Sexual Assault Against Octogenarian, Reveals History of Misconduct
A 76-year-old man has been sentenced to one year of suspended imprisonment and banned from the town of Gorges after being found guilty of sexually assaulting an 84-year-old woman. The incident, which occurred on December 14, 2025, involved the man entering the victim’s home “without being invited” and allegedly engaging in unwanted sexual advances.
According to testimony presented to the Nantes criminal court, the man “caressed the breasts” of the woman and requested she “give a blowjob” after “lowering his blue shorts and his underwear.” The victim reported the incident to police two months later, clarifying that the man’s penis was “erect” at the time. She refused his advances, and he subsequently “left the home.”
The defendant, a retired public works employee with a prior conviction for “drunk driving” in 2012, was known to the victim as “the husband of a friend who died in 2020.” The victim, who had also experienced the loss of her husband seven years prior, maintained she had “never” had any “intimate relationship” with the man, describing him as someone who “does not inspire confidence.”
The victim’s son played a crucial role in bringing the case to light, convincing his “very modest” mother to file a complaint. Following the assault, she sought increased security measures, requesting that her son “change the doors” and “the locks” of her home and install “lamps with presence detector,” expressing a state of anxiety and consistently “closing the gate all the time.”
The case revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior. Testimony from the victim’s hairdresser, presented to the court, detailed a separate incident sixteen years prior in which the defendant “tried to put a hand up your ass,” an advance she firmly rejected, prompting a rebuke from his then-wife. A shopkeeper also indicated that the father of a teenager had previously confronted the defendant after he “looked badly” at his daughter, even resorting to “break down the door” of the victim’s home.
During the trial, the defendant claimed the victim was “very mean” and “lied” about the events, asserting he could not have lowered his pants due to “back problems.” He further alleged that the victim “started to masturbate in my underwear,” a claim met with skepticism by the court president. He did, however, acknowledge the prior incident with his hairdresser, downplaying it by stating she was “young at that time.”
The public prosecutor had initially requested a two-year prison sentence with probationary suspension, along with mandatory care and a ban on contact with the complainant, characterizing the defendant’s explanations as “a little strong coffee.” The defense attorney, Franck-Olivier Ardouin, suggested the possibility of reciprocal sexual gestures by the octogenarian, a claim ultimately dismissed by the court.
The court ultimately imposed a one-year suspended sentence, a three-year ban from Gorges, a five-year ineligibility for public office, and entry into the automated judicial file of perpetrators of sexual offenses (FIJAIS). The defendant was also ordered to pay €500 in damages to the victim, who appeared at the hearing with her son but defended herself without legal representation. The judgment was provisionally executed, meaning it is enforceable even if appealed.
The case underscores the vulnerability of elderly individuals and highlights the importance of addressing predatory behavior, regardless of the perpetrator’s age or social standing. It also reveals the complex dynamics of long-standing relationships and the courage required to come forward and report abuse.
