The visit, occurring after a 37-year gap in full bilateral engagements, underscores the growing importance of the India-Jordan partnership on multiple fronts.
Royal Welcome and Bilateral Discussions
In a gesture highlighting the warmth of the relationship, Jordan’s Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II personally drove Prime Minister Modi to the Jordan Museum on Tuesday.This followed a welcoming reception on Monday by Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan upon Modi’s arrival at the invitation of King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein.
The core of the visit centers on high-level discussions between Prime Minister Modi and King Abdullah II. These talks are expected to encompass a comprehensive review of India-Jordan relations and an exchange of perspectives on pressing regional issues.
Strengthening Ties amidst Global Challenges
Prime Minister Modi utilized the visit to commend Jordan’s resolute stance against terrorism.A senior official stated that the discussions will likely focus on enhanced cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts, reflecting a shared commitment to regional stability. this commitment was further evidenced by a phone conversation between the two leaders in april 2025 following a terror attack in Pahalgam, during which the King reaffirmed Jordan’s support for India’s fight against terrorism.
The visit also provided an possibility for Prime Minister Modi to connect with the Indian community in Amman, Jordan’s capital. He expressed his gratitude for their warm welcome, noting their “affection, pride in India’s progress and strong cultural bonds” as vital to the enduring connection between India and its diaspora. He further acknowledged their ongoing role in strengthening India-Jordan relations. He shared these sentiments on X,formerly known as Twitter.
A Historic Visit After Decades
This marks Prime Minister Modi’s first full-fledged bilateral visit to Jordan, though he previously transited through the country in February 2018 en route to the State of Palestine. According to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary (South), neena Malhotra, even that transit visit was marked by “exceptional courtesies” extended by His Majesty the King.
Malhotra further emphasized the strong foundation of the relationship, noting that the two nations enjoy robust political, economic, and defence cooperation, alongside robust people-to-people ties. Recently, she highlighted the breadth of this cooperation on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy in June 2024.
The renewed focus on bilateral engagement signals a strategic alignment between India and Jordan, poised to navigate a complex geopolitical landscape and foster mutually beneficial partnerships for years to come.
