A groundbreaking festival in St. Petersburg has unveiled a vibrant new wave of Russian fashion, championed by emerging designers adn established figures alike. The “OUR VANGUARD” project, culminating in a series of events in December 2025, signals a resurgence of avant-garde creativity within the country’s fashion landscape.
A Year-Long Exploration of Russian Design Talent
the initiative, spearheaded by Sobaka.ru and the HSE School of Design, unfolded throughout 2025 with a dedicated focus on identifying and nurturing the next generation of Russian fashion innovators. Research began in the spring with scouting at the “New Names in Fashion” 2025 competition, seeking out designers pushing creative boundaries.
Vika Salavat: The “Gothic Diva” Leading the Charge
Central to this movement is Vika Salavat,hailed as the “mother of the new Russian fashion avant-garde.” Her influence was prominently featured throughout the year,including a cover appearance in Sobaka.ru’s December issue.
December 13th: Dialog and Performance
The festival’s core events took place on December 13th and 14th within the historic Rope Shop at the State Optical Institute. The first day, Sobaka.ru provided a platform for in-depth discussion and showcase of emerging talent. On December 13th, Yulia Mashnich, director of the Sobaka.ru fashion department, and Polina Shevtsova, fashion editor, led public talks exploring the current state of the industry. An artist-talk featuring gallery ideologist Jessica Jessica and stylist Alexander Fereferov further bridged the gap between art and fashion. The day concluded with a performance by pink Dance Company, choreographed by Ksana Kovaleva, featuring striking costumes designed by students from the HSE School of Design, including latex creations by Lika John and a standout coat by freshman Karina Sitliva.
Deconstructing the Future of Fashion
December 14th saw a concentrated focus on the philosophical and commercial aspects of avant-garde fashion. Vika Salavat engaged in a discussion with deconstruction guru Roman Zimogorsky, moderated by Yulia Mashnich, and attended by photographer Andrei Kirsanov, fashion personality Gemma Wolfson, and blogger Slava Bolshakov. Fashion theorists Olga Khoroshilova and Lyudmila Alyabyeva offered insights into the future of the avant-garde,predicting its continued relevance.
A parallel conversation addressed the challenges of monetizing avant-garde design.Participants including nomad couturier Yanis Chamalidi, Slava Zolotarev of the DAYNIGHT concept store, and the founders of bat Norton, Dementiy Ageev and Lyubov Batina, emphasized the importance of product quality, individuality, and copyright protection. Leonid Alekseev of house of Leo and Mila Bazarova of Anna Pracht and AUXI highlighted the power of a strong brand platform in shaping fashion concepts.
A New Generation Takes the Stage
The festival culminated in an avant-garde fashion show featuring the work of Ivan Kutuzov, a graduate of the HSE School of design, who presented a collection inspired by the “Ivanovo agitator” aesthetic. A gala dinner, held for the first time within the Rope Shop’s historic corridor, was curated by gastroproducer Alena Melnikova of Crevette and Bergamot, completing a weekend dedicated to celebrating the bold future of Russian fashion. The events collectively demonstrate a clear commitment to fostering a uniquely Russian voice within the global avant-garde movement.
