Colombo: President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has declared another state of emergency in Sri Lanka amid rising anti-government sentiment. The state of emergency has been in place since midnight on Friday.

This is the second time in five weeks that a state of emergency has been declared in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan president has declared a state of emergency again amid mounting protests over the country’s financial crisis. A spokesman for the president said the state of emergency was aimed at ensuring public order.

There was a huge protest outside Parliament on Thursday at midnight. The unions also staged a hartal on Friday demanding Rajapaksa’s resignation. Schools and shops across Sri Lanka are closed nationwide.

Police also applied to the tearing and water floor against protested near the Sri Lankan Parliament. The country is short of electricity, food, fuel and medicine. Impatient people took to the streets during the months-long crisis. Thousands of students continue to protest on their way to parliament. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Thursday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck.

Sri Lanka is reeling from the worst economic crisis since independence in 1948. There are strong protests against the government for not being able to find a solution to the crisis in the country despite borrowing. ‘Go home Gota’ is the slogan that is heard on the streets of Sri Lanka today.
