Eidukas Shines in Davos, Latvian Skiers Battle at Cross-Country World Cup
Latvian cross-country skier Patrīcija Eidukas delivered a standout performance at the World Cup stage in Davos, Switzerland, securing a place in the quarterfinals and signaling a strong return to form. The competition also saw promising efforts from Raimo Vīgant and Lauris Kaparkalējs, despite falling short of quarterfinal qualification, while unexpected results elsewhere added to the drama of the event.
Eidukas Reaches Quarterfinals, Demonstrates Season’s Progress
Eidukas’s journey to the quarterfinals is particularly noteworthy, marking her first appearance at that stage since March 2024, also in Davos. The athlete achieved a 20th-place finish in qualification, followed by an impressive 15th-place result in the freestyle distance event – her best showing thus far in this World Cup season.

While acknowledging a 29th-place finish at the previous stage in Norway, where competition was unusually close, Eidukas expressed satisfaction with her regained speed and the effectiveness of her training regimen. She believes she is making significant strides in her recovery and is prepared for the challenges ahead. The Davos stage itself presents unique obstacles, characterized by its high altitude and unpredictable weather conditions.
Vīgant and Kaparkalējs Show Promise Despite Qualifying Miss
Latvia’s leading male cross-country skiers, Raimo Vīgant and Lauris Kaparkalējs, narrowly missed qualifying for the quarterfinals in Davos. Following a 24th-place finish in the team sprint, neither athlete secured a top-30 position in individual events. However, their performance demonstrated competitive speed against the world’s elite.
Both skiers, hailing from Madona, Latvia, remain optimistic about their future prospects. Vīgant previously achieved a 20th-place finish at the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, representing the highest Olympic result for a Latvian skier. Kaparkalējs has also demonstrated considerable potential, with a win at the European Youth Winter Olympics and multiple medals earned at roller skiing World Cup stages. Their continued dedication suggests further improvements are on the horizon.
World Cup Stage Marked by Surprises and Increased Competition
The Davos stage of the World Cup delivered unexpected results, highlighting the intense competition within the sport. Norway’s Karolina Simpson-Larsen secured a surprising victory in the 10 km freestyle, while Johannes Klebo, a dominant Norwegian sprinter, experienced the lowest result of his career, failing to advance to the quarterfinals.
