Actress Moon So-ri Named Goodwill Ambassador for United Nations World Food Programme

A leading South Korean actress has pledged to amplify the fight against global hunger, officially taking on the role of Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The appointment of Moon So-ri underscores a growing commitment to addressing food insecurity amidst escalating global crises.

The WFP Korea Office, led by Director Hyun-ji Lee, announced the appointment on December 18th. The formal ceremony, hosted by senior announcer Won Jong-bae, took place on December 17th at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul.

A Firsthand Witness to Global Hunger

Moon So-ri’s dedication to the WFP’s mission stems from a deeply impactful visit to WFP project sites in Kenya this past October. She observed the breadth of the organization’s work, from direct food support at the Kakuma Refugee Camp – a critical lifeline for displaced populations – to long-term development and recovery initiatives in Nairobi and the Lodwa region. The experience, she shared, brought the stark realities of the global food crisis into sharp focus.

“Through the story of a refugee I met in Kenya, I deeply realized once again that food is more than just a meal, but has meaning that encompasses hope, courage, kindness, and our relationships,” Moon So-ri stated. “Seeing first-hand the reality that many refugees cannot even eat the bare minimum due to lack of resources, I felt the urgency of the need for more people’s attention.”

She intends to leverage her platform to raise awareness and foster a sense of global solidarity. As a WFP Goodwill Ambassador, Moon So-ri will actively participate in domestic and international campaigns, advocating for increased attention and resources to combat hunger.

WFP Praises Moon So-ri’s Commitment

Lee Hyun-ji, head of WFP’s Korea office, lauded Moon So-ri’s appointment, stating, “Actress Moon So-ri is an outstanding storyteller with a voice trusted by the public and a person who has consistently shown interest in social issues. We are very happy to welcome such actress Moon So-ri to the WFP family, and accompanying her will be a meaningful step in our journey toward a world without hunger.”

Prior to her official appointment, Moon So-ri demonstrated her support for the WFP by contributing her talent to a video series highlighting the organization’s vital work. These videos emphasized the WFP’s position as the world’s largest humanitarian aid organization, prioritizing assistance to the most vulnerable, and underscored the critical link between gender equality and achieving a world without hunger.

A History of Partnership and Global Impact

The WFP provides crucial assistance to individuals facing food crises stemming from conflict, natural disasters, and the escalating climate crisis, operating in over 120 regions worldwide. The organization’s tireless efforts were recognized with the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Republic of Korea has a long-standing relationship with the WFP, having itself been a recipient of WFP support 60 years ago. Today, South Korea stands as a significant donor and steadfast partner, collaborating with the WFP on emergency relief and long-term recovery programs.
