A wave of unruly behavior culminated in widespread brawls and disruptive incidents at Melbourne beaches, prompting a firm response from Victoria police who have pledged to identify and hold accountable every teenager involved. The incidents, occurring over the past two days amid soaring summer temperatures, included violent assaults, property damage, and confrontations with law enforcement.
Escalating Violence at Mordialloc Beach
On Thursday, up to 200 teenagers descended upon Mordialloc Beach in melbourne’s Bayside area before 3 p.m., leading to clashes with police attempting to disperse the increasingly hostile crowd. The situation escalated from a large gathering into multiple physical altercations, including a particularly disturbing attack on a 13-year-old girl.Distressing footage captured the girl being repeatedly punched, kicked, and stomped on by two other teenage girls.
Further videos circulating on TikTok showed additional assaults – one between teenage girls in the water and another depicting a boy being kicked and stomped on the sand. The scale of the unrest necessitated the deployment of the riot squad, water police, and the police AirWing.
“Unacceptable” Behavior Draws Strong Condemnation
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner robert Hill condemned the actions of the group, referring to them as a “brat pack” responsible for terrorizing shoppers and attacking police officers. “It’s just unsatisfactory, it’s unacceptable and Victoria Police will respond accordingly and these people will be held to account,” Hill stated.
The chaos extended beyond the beach itself. A nearby Woolworths supermarket was forced into lockdown as the group stormed the store, allegedly stealing items, causing damage, and frightening both shoppers and staff. Later, the group allegedly hurled glass jars and bottles at police stationed at Mordialloc Pier, prompting officers to use capsicum spray to regain control.
Police Investigation and Parental Responsibility
One 15-year-old boy was arrested and interviewed in connection with the incidents, but has as been released pending further investigation. Three other teenagers, aged between 14 and 17, were also questioned at the scene. Though, police are actively working to locate all other individuals involved.
“Mark my words, each and every child offender that was observed, recorded on CCTV recorded on social media or our body-worn camera will be spoken to by Victoria Police,” Hill affirmed. He urged those involved to proactively contact police, warning that officers would be making home visits in the coming weeks.
Police minister Anthony Carbines echoed this sentiment, calling on parents and guardians to take responsibility. “If you recognize your kid there, you should be taking them down to the local cop shop and take some responsibility, as the behavior was disgraceful,” Carbines said.
Authorities believe the beach gathering was organized through social media by a group of local teenagers from the Bentleigh, Black Rock, and surrounding areas. Hill expressed frustration with the situation, stating, “Quite frankly, we’ve got better things to do than to deploy to 150 youth causing mayhem on the beach. They should know better.”
Police confirmed that no weapons were involved in the brawls and that the teenagers were not affiliated with any known criminal gangs. An increased police presence will be visible around Mordialloc and nearby areas in the coming days.
Broader Context and Ongoing Concerns
The incidents occurred as Victoria Police launched its SummerSafe campaign, aimed at ensuring beachgoer safety through increased patrols along the Victorian coastline. Hill acknowledged the potential for alarm, particularly in light of similar incidents in Bondi, New south wales.
On Friday, police responded to another assault at St kilda Pier around 1 p.m., where a male was attacked by two other males in front of a large crowd. The victim sustained minor injuries, and the assailants fled before police arrived. Footage from the pier later in the afternoon showed approximately 100 youths running down the pier. .
The ongoing investigations underscore the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing large gatherings of young people and maintaining public order during the summer months.
