From Kayak to Countryside: How One Woman is Revitalizing Rural China Through Online Commerce and Community Support

A growing movement of “new farmers” is reshaping China’s rural landscape, and one woman’s story exemplifies this trend. Sun Linlin, a 29-year-old former athlete, is leveraging the power of online video to connect consumers with the unique agricultural products of northern Shaanxi province, while together providing vital support to her community.
A wave of young professionals, having gained experience and skills elsewhere, are returning to their rural hometowns to contribute to local growth. Linlin’s journey embodies this shift, demonstrating how digital platforms can bridge the gap between rural producers and wider markets.
A Return to Roots
After retiring from a career as a kayaker,Linlin made a conscious decision to return to her roots in northern Shaanxi. “There are too many treasures in the mountain, but many people don’t know that it is blocked by this mountain,” she explained. “I hope that through me, more people can learn about northern Shaanxi and eat these healthy things.” This realization sparked her venture into becoming a “new farmer,” a role that proved more challenging than anticipated.
Initially, Linlin faced the hurdle of sourcing products. She and her two sisters spent months traversing winding mountain roads, visiting village after village to identify and secure local goods. “I searched all over the village, and I would take it from anyone who sold it,” she recalled. “After a year like this,they have become stable. Wherever I go, they will stay and let me collect them.”
Connecting Farmers to Markets
Millet, a staple crop in the region, quickly became a key product. Linlin recognized the difficulties faced by local farmers who had to transport their harvest long distances to town, often resulting in lower prices as the grain aged. Word of her initiative spread rapidly, and soon villagers were bringing their newly harvested millet directly to her.
By creating a direct market link, Linlin not only boosted farmers’ incomes but also ensured consumers had access to fresh, high-quality produce. Beyond commerce, she consistently extends a helping hand to the elderly residents of the villages she visits, providing them with essential supplies like grain, oil, and milk.
A community in Need
Linlin’s commitment extends beyond economic empowerment.While collecting goods, she encountered Guoguo, a young child battling a rare tumor. Moved by Guoguo’s plight, Linlin mobilized her online community to provide financial assistance and seek medical advice.
“Guoguo’s mother told me that they are going to Beijing today for surgery. This is quite happy. I feel that the baby can be saved at least. I just want to go to Beijing with Guoguo’s mother to see the doll,” Linlin shared, demonstrating her deep empathy and dedication. Thankfully, Guoguo received successful treatment in Beijing, a testament to the power of collective support.
Looking Ahead
Having successfully navigated the initial challenges and witnessed the positive impact of her work, Linlin remains focused on expanding her reach. She intends to continue opening up new markets for agricultural products from northern Shaanxi and inspiring others to return to their hometowns.
“I hope that through my videos, more young people can return to their hometowns,” Linlin stated. “I also hope that more people will know about northern Shaanxi and let them have a taste.There are so many good things in the mountains of northern Shaanxi.” Her story serves as a powerful example of how entrepreneurial spirit, combined with a commitment to community, can drive positive change in rural China.
