Railroad Workers Discover Injured Raccoon in Remarkable Rescue

A group of railroad workers stumbled upon a harrowing scene earlier this week: a severely injured raccoon lying motionless on the tracks. Initially fearing the worst, the workers were relieved to discover the animal was still alive, prompting a swift rescue operation and a hopeful journey toward recovery.
A team of railroad employees were conducting routine repairs and maintenance when they noticed the animal. Believing it to be deceased, they approached cautiously, only to witness a slight movement. Recognizing the raccoon was in dire need of assistance, they immediately contacted MoonShine Wildlife Rehabilitation, a local organization specializing in the care of injured and orphaned wildlife.
Critical Condition Upon Arrival
According to Christine McCully of MoonShine Wildlife Rehabilitation, the raccoon’s condition was extremely critical. “The worker put her into a milk crate with a towel and brought her to us,” McCully stated. The animal was found to be severely emaciated, suffering from significant head trauma, a concussion, and open wounds. Tragically, she had also lost a back toe and was unable to move her hind legs or even support her own head.
Rescuers immediately transported the raccoon to Whitestone Animal Hospital for diagnostic imaging. X-rays revealed a major concussion and a small fracture in her skull, casting doubt on her chances of survival. Despite the grim prognosis, the team pledged to provide the highest level of care possible.
A Stunning Turnaround
After several days of intensive treatment – including intravenous fluids, targeted medications, and meticulous hand-feeding – the raccoon began to show remarkable signs of improvement. She regained her appetite and, astonishingly, began to regain the ability to walk.
“She still stumbles and has a ways to go, but she is doing so much better than expected,” McCully reported, expressing both shock and elation at the animal’s progress. The rapid turnaround has instilled a renewed sense of hope among her caregivers.

While the raccoon’s healing journey remains uncertain, MoonShine Wildlife Rehabilitation is committed to providing ongoing support and compassionate care for as long as necessary.
