Pendon, who continues to work at the night market, expressed a sense of detachment regarding the recent news surrounding Sajid Akram and his son Naveed, the individuals implicated in the Bondi attack. “It won’t happen again in Davao,” Pendon stated, reflecting a prevailing sentiment among residents attempting to move past the trauma of the 2016 bombing. However, Philippine authorities are taking the presence of the Akrams seriously, meticulously reconstructing their movements during their month-long visit.

Investigation Underway
Law enforcement officials have confirmed they are “not taking lightly” the Akrams’ presence in Davao City. Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage and tracing taxi routes to determine the extent of their activities and potential contacts made during their stay. The pair were reportedly frequent patrons of a local Jollibee fast food restaurant and stayed at the GV Hotel.
Authorities have clarified that the investigation is ongoing and the purpose of their visit remains unknown. Emelyn Lorenzo, another massage therapist at the market, suggested the Akrams were simply tourists, stating, “But they were here for tourism, not terrorism.”
Duterte’s Legacy and Security Concerns
Davao City has long been associated with the hardline anti-crime policies of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who previously served as the city’s mayor. Residents largely credit these policies with maintaining a secure environment and deterring further attacks. Increased security measures are visible at the night market, with at least four personnel inspecting bags at one entrance.
The Philippine government has refuted claims that the country served as a terrorist training ground for the accused Bondi shooters. Eduardo Año, the Philippines’ national security adviser, affirmed that the Akrams did not receive military-style training within the country and never left Davao City.

The investigation has sparked concern in Marawi City, the site of a five-month battle between the military and IS-linked militants in 2017. Residents fear that renewed focus on terrorism could lead to increased securitization and exacerbate existing biases against the Muslim population.
Karlos Manlupig, executive director of the peace-building NGO Balay Mindanao, emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of extremism. “It is just unfortunate that legitimate grievances are hijacked by extremism,” Manlupig said. “Sadly, the narrative of brutal violence was unfairly glued to Mindanao’s identity.” He stressed the need to address socioeconomic and political factors while promoting tolerance and understanding.
Tirmizy Abdullah, a faculty member at Mindanao State University in Marawi City, urged a thorough and transparent investigation. “[The Akrams’] stay should be properly investigated and the intel should provide clear and truthful answers without turning uncertainty into blame against Mindanao or its people,” Abdullah stated.
Philippine police SWAT members remain on standby as investigators continue their work. The investigation unfolds as the predominantly Catholic nation prepares for Christmas, with city halls adorned with festive decorations and communities embracing the holiday spirit.
