Oregon Secures Playoff Victory Over James Madison, but coach Lanning Expresses Sharp Discontent

Despite securing a 51-34 win against James Madison in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday, december 20, 2025, the Oregon Ducks’ performance left head coach Dan Lanning visibly frustrated. The victory propels Oregon (12-1) to the quarterfinals against No. 4 Texas Tech, but Lanning made it clear that significant improvements are needed.

Oregon dominated the first half, racing to a commanding 34-6 lead at halftime. This early surge effectively secured their place in the quarterfinals. However, James Madison, initially outmatched, mounted a spirited comeback, outscoring Oregon 28-17 in the second half. While the Dukes’ efforts weren’t enough to threaten the final result, they exposed vulnerabilities in Oregon’s game on both offense and defense.

“There’s a standard here,” Lanning stated, reflecting his dissatisfaction. “There’s certainly a standard of performance. Our players know that, and they know what championship football looks like – and the second half didn’t look like that.”

Lanning’s Disappointment and the Pursuit of Championship Form

Lanning declined to elaborate on his emotional state, but his demeanor spoke volumes. He recognized that the team’s second-half performance was not indicative of a squad capable of making a deep playoff run. Another quarterfinal exit would be a considerable setback for a team with aspirations of a national championship.

Despite the concerns, Oregon showcased several strengths during the game. The Ducks amassed 514 yards of total offense, successfully blocked a field goal and a punt, and benefited from a strong performance by quarterback Dante Moore. Moore completed 19 of 27 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns, adding a rushing score to his tally. though, two interceptions by Moore did contribute to 10 points for James Madison.

Players and Coordinators Acknowledge Areas for Improvement

Moore acknowledged Lanning’s critique, framing it as a necessary catalyst for improvement. “The whole team understands that this wasn’t our best game, but at the end of the day, we won the football game,” Moore said.”In the playoffs, if you lose, you go home. We’re glad we won.” He described Lanning as a demanding leader who inspires the team through his intensity. “Coach Lanning is our leader. We go as he goes,” Moore explained.”Everybody knows how Coach Lanning is. He’s psycho. He’s going to put that fire under us, and it’s needed. We don’t want everyone to get satisfied, and we never have been all year.”

Oregon’s defensive coordinator, Tosh Lupoi, echoed lanning’s concerns, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of the victory. Lupoi, who will continue with the Ducks through the playoffs despite recently being hired as Cal’s head coach, emphasized the need for significant improvement. “It’s a bittersweet feeling that we get to move on and very thankful for that,” Lupoi said. “But if we played anywhere remotely close this next game [to] the way we did in the second half, then we’re going to have a disappointing feeling after the game.”

James Madison’s Historic Run and Future outlook

James Madison (12-2) concluded its historic season as the first Sun Belt team to reach the College Football Playoff, finishing with 509 yards of total offense, including 110 rushing yards from Wayne Knight. Despite the loss, james Madison coach Bob Chesney expressed pride in his team’s accomplishments. Chesney, who will transition to his new role as UCLA’s head coach, stated, “In order to accomplish what we did to get here, I think there are things we should be really proud of. And obviously, ending it on this night the way it ended is not ideal, but at the same time, it doesn’t take away from what we did during the course of the year.”

The Ducks now turn their attention to a challenging quarterfinal matchup against Texas Tech, where they will need to address the inconsistencies exposed by James Madison to advance further in the pursuit of a national title.
