Teh Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced December 22, 2025, its plan to establish a Key Laboratory for Plant Factory Technology and Breeding.the lab will be located within the Institute of Urban Agriculture,Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, marking a substantial investment in controlled-environment agriculture and its potential to transform food production. This initiative aims to bolster research and progress in optimizing crop yields and resource efficiency.

Did you know? – Plant factories use technologies like LED lighting and hydroponics to create ideal growing conditions, autonomous of external weather patterns. This allows for year-round crop production and reduced water usage.

The project’s approval process followed the “Working Procedures for Construction Project Management of Units Directly Affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs” (2025 revised edition). A feasibility assessment was completed and reviewed by an evaluation mechanism before public proclamation. The Ministry is now seeking public feedback on the project for five working days, beginning december 22, 2025.

Individuals who object to the proposed laboratory’s construction are invited to submit their concerns to the Development Planning Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs by December 30, 2025. All submissions must be truthful, objective, and supported by verifiable evidence, along with the submitter’s full name and contact details. The project aims to address growing concerns about food security and enduring agricultural practices.

Pro tip – Controlled-environment agriculture can significantly reduce pesticide use, as crops are grown in a protected environment with limited pest exposure. This contributes to safer and healthier food production.
