Jakarta – Indonesia is breathing a sigh of relief as the influence of cyclone seed 93S wanes, but coastal areas should remain vigilant for high waves. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported late Monday, December 22, 2025, that the archipelago won’t experience increased rainfall or strong winds from the cyclone for the next 24 hours. Still, the ocean’s temper hasn’t fully calmed.
Coastal Waters Face Waves Up To 13 Feet
High waves are expected in several Indonesian waters due to the cyclone seed’s lingering effects.
- Waves of 1.25-2.50 meters are expected west of Lampung, in the southern Sunda Strait, and the southern java Sea.
- Larger waves, reaching 2.50-4.0 meters, are likely in the Indian Ocean west of the Mentawai Islands to Bengkulu.
- The Indian Ocean south of Bali to West Nusa Tenggara could see waves up to 4.0 meters (approximately 13 feet).
- Despite diminishing influence, cyclone seed 93S is predicted to strengthen into a Category 1 cyclone.
The BMKG forecasts waves between 1.25 and 2.50 meters in the waters west of Lampung, the southern portion of the Sunda Strait, and the southern waters of Java Island.The Indian Ocean west of Lampung and south of Java Island will also experience similar wave heights. Further east, conditions are expected to be more intense.
The Indian Ocean west of the Mentawai Islands to Bengkulu, and the waters south of Bali to West Nusa Tenggara, are likely to see waves ranging from 2.50 to 4.0 meters. That’s roughly 13 feet – enough to disrupt maritime traffic and pose a risk to coastal communities.
What exactly is a cyclone seed? It’s an early-stage tropical disturbance with the potential to develop into a full-blown tropical cyclone. While cyclone seed 93S is moving away, it’s not entirely out of the picture.
The cyclone seed, which initially formed on December 11, is being fueled by warm sea surface temperatures (28-30 degrees Celsius) and high humidity in the lower atmosphere (80-90 percent). Though, the intrusion of dry air into the middle and upper atmosphere could hinder its further development.
As of 7:00 p.m. local time on monday, December 22, 2025, the center of Tropical Cyclone seed 93S was located in the Indian Ocean southwest of West java. It packed maximum sustained winds of 35 knots (65 km/h) and a minimum central air pressure of 996 hPa. The storm is currently moving west-southwest, away from Indonesian territory.
While the immediate threat to Indonesia has lessened, the BMKG continues to monitor the situation closely. Coastal communities are advised to stay informed and heed any warnings issued by local authorities.
