Foiled Terror Plot Targeted Manchester Jewish Community, Authorities Say

A planned terrorist attack, potentially the deadliest in UK history, was thwarted thanks to proactive intelligence gathering, authorities have revealed. The alleged mastermind, identified as Saadaoui and residing in Abram, Wigan, utilized a network of fake social media profiles to disseminate extremist ideologies and ultimately plot an assault on the Jewish community in Greater Manchester.

Authorities became aware of Saadaoui’s activities when he employed 10 Facebook accounts, operating under false identities, to spread a “torrent of Islamic extremist views.” An undercover operative, known as Farouk, was then deployed to establish trust with Saadaoui both online and in person.

Online Radicalization and Target Identification

Saadaoui’s online activity extended to infiltrating groups associated with the Jewish community. He used one of his fabricated accounts to join the Facebook group of the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester, gaining access to details about a “March Against Antisemitism” held in the city center on January 21 of last year, an event attended by thousands.

Days following the march, Saadaoui reportedly communicated to Farouk: “Here in Manchester, we have the biggest Jewish community.” He then allegedly expressed a desire to inflict harm, stating, “God willing we will degrade and humiliate them (in the worst way possible), and hit them where it hurts.” This chilling statement underscores the deliberate targeting of a specific community.

Recruitment and Planning

The investigation revealed that Saadaoui did not act alone. He recruited Hussein, a Kuwaiti national working at a furniture shop in Bolton, Greater Manchester, to assist in carrying out his plans. Hussein, described as a fellow IS sympathizer, allegedly agreed to support the unfolding plot.

The extent of the planned attack remains undisclosed, but officials have emphasized the severity of the threat. The successful intervention by law enforcement prevented a potentially catastrophic event.

This case highlights the evolving challenges of combating terrorism in the digital age and the importance of proactive intelligence gathering to identify and disrupt extremist networks before they can act. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the legal process unfolds.
