AI-Powered Virtual Assistant Revolutionizes Heart Valve Disease Care in Spain

A new artificial intelligence system is dramatically improving outcomes for patients with severe aortic stenosis, reducing wait times and enabling faster recovery through remote monitoring.

A groundbreaking healthcare innovation originating in the Alicante province of Spain is delivering significant benefits to patients in the Elche area and beyond. The Doctor Balmis General University Hospital, a leading center for complex medical conditions, has successfully implemented an artificial intelligence (AI) powered virtual assistant, known as TELETAVI, to streamline care for patients requiring a percutaneous aortic valve implantation (TAVI). This minimally invasive procedure is increasingly favored for its reduced complications and faster recovery times.

Launched in 2023, TELETAVI utilizes a Virtual Voice Clinical assistant powered by AI to monitor patients both after surgery and, crucially, while they await the procedure. “Working with artificial intelligence allows us to constantly evolve,” explained a lead physician on the project. “Thanks to this tool, we can now closely monitor patients awaiting a TAVI implant and detect in time when their clinical situation requires priority intervention.”

How the AI System Works

Severe aortic stenosis, the most common degenerative valve disease in Western societies, disproportionately affects the elderly. Recognizing this, the clinical team developed a system of biweekly automated phone calls conducted by the AI assistant. These calls involve nine key questions designed to assess the patient’s current condition and identify any potential deterioration.

To date, the TELETAVI project has followed up with 255 patients, leading to the prioritization of TAVI implantation for 46 individuals. Researchers emphasize that this proactive monitoring has been instrumental in ensuring patients receive the procedure in optimal clinical condition, thereby minimizing the risk of serious complications and even preventing fatalities.

The Human Touch in an AI-Driven System

While technology is at the heart of this innovation, the project’s creators underscore the importance of the human element. “It is indeed just two minutes and ten seconds of conversation, but that periodic contact makes an enormous difference in the patient’s evolution,” noted a researcher involved in the project. This regular interaction provides reassurance and allows for early detection of changes in a patient’s health status.

The success of TELETAVI has already garnered recognition, receiving an award for the best publication in the first quartile according to the Journal Citation Report (JCR) during the VIII ISABIAL Clinical Research Day. The project also forms the foundation of a doctoral thesis.

TAVI: A Lifeline for Older and High-Risk Patients

Percutaneous aortic valve implantation has become a vital treatment option for patients over 75 years of age or those deemed at high surgical risk. The Doctor Balmis Hospital has emerged as a regional leader in this procedure, having performed approximately 300 TAVI surgeries in the past year, with projections indicating a 20% increase by 2026.

The hospital’s unique position as the sole provider of this procedure within the province is attributed to its highly specialized multidisciplinary team, comprising cardiologists, specialized nurses, anesthesiologists, radiologists, vascular surgeons, and neuroradiologists. This collaborative approach ensures extensive and high-quality care.

Faster Recovery and Improved Continuity of Care

The results of the study initiated in 2023 strongly support the integration of AI as a valuable tool in monitoring patients undergoing TAVI. The model has demonstrably improved both nursing and medical care, contributing to enhanced patient well-being. Furthermore, the data reveal that early hospital discharges – between 24 and 48 hours post-implantation – have become increasingly common, facilitated by the close and consistent follow-up provided while patients continue their recovery at home.

This innovative approach to cardiovascular care exemplifies a commitment to patient-centered care and highlights the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in modern medicine.
