A extensive reconstruction of the historic Trenčín railway station is set to move forward after Slovak Republic Railways (ŽSR) completed the acceptance of project documentation from the contractor. The project, eagerly anticipated by residents and commuters alike, aims to address decades of wear and tear while enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Historical Hub Poised for Transformation
Built in the 19th century during the expansion of Slovakia’s rail network, the Trenčín station serves as a crucial transportation hub connecting western Slovakia with the capital, Bratislava, and surrounding regions. Serving hundreds of passengers daily, the station functions not only as a transit point but also as a key local mobility center facilitating connections to city and regional transport. Despite its historical meaning, the station’s infrastructure has deteriorated, necessitating a complete overhaul.
Scope of the Reconstruction
According to a statement from ŽSR spokeswoman Petra Lániková,the reconstruction will encompass a wide range of improvements. These include completing renovations for railway employees, a full facade renovation with added insulation, roof repairs, upgrades to electrical installations and lightning protection, and modifications to spaces for the traveling public. specifically, the project will incorporate accessible restrooms for individuals with disabilities, replacement of flooring and plumbing, and modernization of engineering networks. A new voice and information system will also be implemented to improve passenger communication.
Moreover, the plans include the construction of a temporary building for passengers, alongside paved areas and dedicated bicycle sheds. “The anticipated start of work and specific dates will be known only after the end of the public procurement and according to the financial possibilities of ŽSR, as the construction will be financed from the railways’ own resources,” Lániková stated.
Project Timeline and Funding
The total construction period is estimated at approximately 18 months. ŽSR will finance the project entirely from its own resources, underscoring the railway’s commitment to improving its infrastructure. This reconstruction represents a strategic investment in the transport infrastructure of the Trenčín region, with the goal of increasing both safety and the quality of services provided.
