But for those who aren’t fans of the cold, like Emilie, the holiday season offers a welcome respite before the depths of winter set in.
What’s the best part of Christmas vacation? “It’s one of the coziest things I know,” she explained. “I associate it with family time and good food! And not least Christmas decorations, Christmas lights and hot drinks. Not to mention Christmas soda!”
A Nostalgic Trip Down Memory Lane
The holidays also bring back cherished memories of tech-related gifts. “I remember getting expansion packs for The Sims on Christmas Eve felt a bit like winning the jackpot! It was about the best I could get!” she recalled with a laugh. Those early gaming experiences often unfolded while the aroma of a Christmas Eve dinner filled the house.
“I also have many memories of sitting and playing games in the morning while the pork chops are being prepared downstairs in the kitchen,” she said. “There is always a bit of a wait on Christmas Eve, so I remember well that I enjoyed playing Age of Mythology to pass the time, or playing a few rounds of Need for Speed, Warcraft 3 or The Sims.”
While the thrill of unwrapping a new game remains, her gift preferences have evolved. “The most fun is getting things you want, or as you need,” she explained. “When I was younger, I think the best thing I could get for Christmas was toys or games. Then it was straight up to the family PC and start the installation (it could take 3-4 hours)! But now I appreciate more boring adult gifts such as a new frying pan or other necessary things for the home.”
Even a thoughtful, handmade gift can be particularly meaningful. “I also realized, a few years ago I got homemade caramel popcorn from a friend for Christmas, and I really appreciated that! Gifts that show consideration are nice!”
Simple Pleasures and Future Tech
Despite her passion for gaming, Emilie finds joy in low-tech Christmas traditions. “I don’t need so many gadgets at Christmas anymore, I enjoy just being with my family and checking my mobile here and there,” she said. “And watch Ivo Caprino’s classics on TV and lots of Christmas films such as Love Actually, Harry Potter and Home Alone! Some of the Christmas programs on TV are also very nice (mum and dad still have linear TV, so it’s very nice to have it on in the background at Christmas!).
Looking ahead to 2026, Emilie has a whimsical wish for a technological marvel: “I dream of teleporting to warmer areas in the winter, so it would have been a neat ‘gadget’ for me! But I think that is reserved for sci-fi and fantasy films for now.” For now, though, she’s content with the “incredible amount of cool gadgets” already available.
