Hernals Fitness Landmark “WorkOut” Gym to Close After Operator’s Retirement

A beloved community fitness center in Vienna’s Hernals district will permanently close its doors on January 25th, following the retirement of its operator, Martin Becker, and the owners’ decision not to continue operations. The closure of “WorkOut” marks the end of an era for the 500 members who frequented the gym, as well as the 28 employees who have already been laid off.
A Community Hub Lost
The “WorkOut” gym was more than just a place to exercise; it was a social meeting place and a fixture in the Hernals neighborhood. Many members, some of whom have been attending since the gym’s founding, expressed deep sadness at the news. “It’s particularly sad because there are no studios like this in the area. We’re all now looking to see where we can find something new,” one long-time course participant told ORF Vienna. The gym fostered a family atmosphere that distinguished it from larger chain fitness centers.
Impact Beyond Fitness
The impact of the closure extends beyond the loss of a gym. For three decades, “WorkOut” has also operated a swimming school, teaching countless children in the district how to swim. The gym catered to a diverse clientele, with a significant number of older members, including one 90-year-old who has been a loyal customer since the beginning. According to the current operator, Becker, the gym was “much more than just training.”
Financial Challenges and Future of the Site
The sudden closure has created significant financial difficulties. Becker stated that the situation is “a financial catastrophe,” forcing the gym to engage an auction company to liquidate its assets. The inventory, including sports equipment, will be auctioned off, with some items also available for direct purchase.
Plans to continue operating the gym were considered as recently as five weeks ago, but were ultimately rejected by the owners. The future of the property itself remains uncertain, with speculation that the building, described as “rather desolate,” may be renovated and converted into apartments.
Employees Reflect on Closure
The closure has also impacted the gym’s staff. Alex Baumgartl, who led spinning classes for many years, shared his initial reaction: “At the moment, your head knows that it will be over. The emotions, especially the sadness, about it being over will probably come later.”
The auctioned pieces can be picked up on January 26th and 27th. The closure of “WorkOut” represents a loss for the Hernals community, highlighting the importance of local fitness centers as vital social hubs.
