NEW YORK, May 16, 2024 – A groundbreaking strategy for preventing peanut allergies – introducing peanut-containing foods to babies early in life – is remarkably effective, but access to this preventative measure isn’t equal. A new study reveals significant disparities in early peanut introduction, raising concerns about widening allergy gaps.
Unequal Access Threatens Allergy Prevention Gains
The study underscores that while early peanut introduction is a powerful tool, its benefits aren’t reaching all infants who could benefit.

The current guidelines, established in 2017 by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), recommend introducing peanut-containing foods to most infants between 4 and 6 months of age to reduce their risk of developing peanut allergy. This proactive approach has proven to be a game-changer in allergy prevention, but a new analysis published on May 16, 2024, in the journal JAMA Network Open shows that these recommendations aren’t being universally followed.
Disparities in Early Introduction
Researchers analyzed data from over 9,000 infants and found that only about 36% of infants had peanut introduced between 4 and 6 months. Notably, there were significant differences across demographic groups. Black infants were least likely to have peanut introduced early, at a rate of 26.3%, followed by Hispanic infants at 31.7%. White infants had the highest rate of early introduction, at 41.7%.
Socioeconomic factors also played a role. Infants from households with lower incomes were less likely to be introduced to peanut early compared to those from higher-income households. The study authors suggest that this may be due to a variety of factors, including limited access to healthcare, lack of awareness about the guidelines, and concerns about potential allergic reactions.
The Importance of Early Exposure
The reason early introduction works is that it helps the immune system develop tolerance to peanut proteins. Delaying exposure can actually increase the risk of developing an allergy. However, it’s crucial to note that the guidelines are not a one-size-fits-all approach. Infants with severe eczema or egg allergy should be evaluated by a healthcare professional before introducing peanut-containing foods.
“These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to ensure that all infants have access to the benefits of early peanut introduction,” says Dr. Ruchi Gupta, a lead author of the study and a professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “We need to address the barriers that are preventing certain groups from following these guidelines.”
The study’s authors emphasize the importance of educating parents and healthcare providers about the NIAID guidelines and providing resources to help families safely introduce peanut-containing foods to their infants. Closing the gap in access to this preventative measure could significantly reduce the burden of peanut allergy in the United States.
